Videostudio 10 was running perfectly, now crashfest

Post by Al Mundy »

I've been using VS10 for 6 months or more and it's worked extremely well. Now, every time, Windows encounters an error and has to close before the program can even load. Perhaps a Windows update may have triggered this. Anyone have a clue what to do? I have a Pentium 4 - 3.00 Ghz machine with 2 gig of RAM, running XP with SP2 fully updated. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing it several times to no avail. Even deleted the temp files and cleared the registry entries for Ulead with regedit and then rebooted and re-installed. Instant crash. I set it up on my secondary computer running XP - SP2 with a P4 - 2.40 Ghz and 1 gig RAM and it's running fine there. Any advice is welcome! Thanks in advance!

I too have experienced VS10+ crashing and after turning off AUTOMATIC SAVE (in preferences) it is now a lot more stable.
I would suggest that you start by UN Installing VS and then re-installing the product.

Go back to a System Restore point.

Hi Al,

Last week my VS10+ would not open &/or crash. I did two system restores, removed programmed, re-installed VS10+ with no luck.

Rather then re-installing VS10+ in c:/program files, I created a new directory on my c drive called VS10 & installed VS10+ their. After one week, I've had good success.

Well, I must say I was very optimistic about possibly installing it in an alternate directory so I did and with the same results. I also tried 2 other drives and also no luck. There is one big clue though. In order for the setup not to crash, I must manually go into the CD and execute the "Setup" program as opposed to "Autorun". The difference is Autorun invokes a "DemoShield Player" that launches Setup and this player immediately crashes the entire installation and it has to close. This all used to work. It appears that I may now be missing some graphic DLL or utility that once existed that supports this player and possibly something that CS10 needs to load. To make matters worse, I've run complete tests on this PC on PC Pistop and it comes up with checkered flags on everything and says my PC rates in the top 10% of all PC's tested. There must be something intuitively obvious to the casual observer that I'm missing...

I wouldn't worry too much about the DemoShield, it is OK to install directly from Setup.

Try our clean installation procedure here:

Thanks a million for all of the replies. May I ask a naive question? When the correct repair procedure asks you to delete ALL files in several directories including /WINDOWS/TEMP, are you in fact saying that ALL sub-folders also be deleted or just the files within the primary directory it refers to?

I tried the clean installation procedure over 5 times now (using setup instead of autorun) and even tried installing VS10-SP1 after the install. It sits on the Ulead logo into for about 2 seconds and then crashes every time. Whatever is wrong, is really wrong. I guess there comes a time to just throw in the towel. I really like this program a lot too.

Why do so many have so many problems with VS10?
Hope VS11 is more stable.

I'm so stubborn I've kept trying and still no luck. This program worked so well for 6 months on this very machine too. Out of frustration I reinstalled Pinnacle Studio 10 that I bought right before Ulead VS10 and it even runs fine, but I don't want to go back to that. It's got a ton of bugs and Ulead (when it doesn't crash on execute) is considerably better. I'll keep checking back. I refuse to give up.

Check the Windows Event Log for error messages:

START | RUN dialog box
%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s
and press enter.
Now check the following two folders
Application
System

You will find a red circle with a white cross inside. Double click to open it and there you will find a link
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This link also contains some hidden code appertaining to your error.
Double click and you will then be given more detailed information and possible cures.
