Unspecified Error

Post by zforray »

Yep......that is the error message (or lack of one) that I received from DVDMF6P.

I had a 6GB MPEG that I put in the project and simply said "burn it". Then it said it was too big for the 4.5GB DVD......did I want to "make it fit".

I clicked on YES.........it ran for 48-minutes (not very speedy rendering for an AMD Athlon X2 +4200 w/2GB DDR2 and 16MB cache drives) and then displayed a simple box with "Unspecified Error" in it. No details...nada...zip....

Then things got ugly and the machine locked up. I had to power-reset.

Any clues on what could cause this (no, I wasn't sitting here the whole time, watching it...) :x

Well, I clicked on your button (and the other SYSTEM button) and all I get are a screen with blank spaces and no option to fill anything in.

I did run Belarc advisor and it said:

I could list the 100+ other programs I have installed, but since the report includes my license keys, I wont put it up here.

I had a 6GB MPEG...
There is probably something "wrong" with your MPEG file, or maybe just something about it that Movie Factory doesn't like. It is not uncommon for a file to play OK, but cause trouble when you try to edit it or make a DVD from it... I call it "sneaky corruption".

This type of problem is most common with highly compressed MPEG-4 variations (including DivX and Xvid). It's less common with MPEG-2, and very rare with DV-AVI. If your set-up allows you to capture to DV-AVI, that will probably solve your problem!

Did you do any editing in MPEG format? (Cutting & splicing, or joining with transitions?) Sometimes simply editing an MPEG can corrupt it... Or, maybe it just makes the corruption worse... Usually when I've had problems, I've been able to make a good DVD from my unedited MPEG.

What is the playing-time of your file? What audio format are you using? Maybe it can't squeeze it enough to fit...

Where did that file come from? Is it MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4? What's the audio format on the MPEG file? Again, the more-compressed formats (i.e. MP3) cause the most trouble.

One thing you can do to isolate the problem is to "burn" the DVD folders to you hard drive instead of to the actual DVD:

- When you get to the "burn" step, check the box that says Create DVD folders and un-check Create Disc. If that works, you'll get the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders on your hard drive, instead of on a DVD. If that works, you have a problem during the actual burning step.

If that doesn't work, VideoReDo and Womble both have tools to fix some MPEG problems. Both also offer free trials. In fact, I solved all of my weird MPEG problems by using Womble for editing. (I still use Ulead to make the DVD.) However, your situation may be different.

This MPEG was created by DVDMF5P as an IMPORT of a DVD. I have used it, before, to cut clips out of, without problems.

I think I figured it out. It seems DVDMF6P doesn't like my LITEON 20X burner (yes, I have the latest firmware). I reran the process and pointed it to my LITEON 16X burner and it seems to have worked.

Thanks for the help and the info on the other tools. I will look at them for future issues.
