object explosion - qty of shrapnel

Is there a way to limit the amount and size of the pieces?

I've messed with the level and variation, but without much success.

Try the followings.

The Project menu:

Curve Quality->Draft

The Attribute Panel->Precision & Quality

Precision->0
Subdivide method->Relative

When exploding rotatating text around an object, the shrapnel is made up of huge, long and many splinters.
If I explode the same amount of text using the same parameters with no other animation, the amount of shrapnel is tiny in comparison.

Is there any logic to this?
