VS10+ Crashing at 65% Every time

Post by YLP »

I have the lasted version of VS10+ (sp1) and I can repeat this crash every time on media rendering from DVD to .wmv.

At 65% rendering, VS will crash and I get the tell MS about the error dialog box.

This is the application error via my log:

I have a Dell XPS Dual Core 3 gig Processor with 2 gigs of memory
100 Gig Hard Drive (defragmented and with 60 gigs of space), XP Professional (sp2)

This started when I tried to created a .wmv with multi clips and now it does it on everything.

Since this error is pointing at the mpegin.dll --- would I have to just reinstall that .dll? If so, where do I get it? (I bought the d/l version).

Any ideas on how I can fix this problem? Thanks in advance.

This sounds like a corrupt video file.
How are you importing the video - you said you are going from DVD to WMV. If so you should import the DVD as shown here:

Thank you for the quick response.

I am importing like I have always done:
Record a program onto my DVD media, close the media via the tv recorder and then plop the DVD into my dvd driver and import it into VS10+.

I am on my way to read the link you provided. What I don't understand is why all of a sudden this is happening. I can't have all bad dvd media (same spool I used successfully in the past and same dvd tv recorder).

I will post back after I read the link you provided.

Hi again. I reviewed the link you posted and that is exactly how I import my dvds to VS. I tried a different dvd import and the same thing is happening at 65%.

This started about the same time that I had made several clips from one dvd and tried to render it as it's own .wmv. It was a total of 14 minutes of short snippets of the original dvd.

Any other ideas?

And thank you again for trying to help me. I appreciate it.

Possibly a corrupt file.
Firstly you think it may be mpegin.dll so check to see if there is more than one version of this on your computer with the XP search function.

If there is more than one then make sure the newest version is in your
windows system folder. Then rename the others by changing the dll extension to old (mpegin.old)

If you do not have more than one instance of mpegin.dll on your computer, or if this fails to solve the problem then run the VideoStudio installation program again. this time you will have a repair option.
Try the repair option first.

If this still does not solve the problem then try a clean installation using the method shown here:
Re-Installation of Ulead Products

Please update this link with the results of these actions.

I have this problem of freezing at 65% only in the following circumstances:

Instead of capturing TV stream onto the DVD I record to Hard disk, then afterwards I copy the HDD file to a DVD.
When importing within VS10+ (via capture step) it stops at 65%.
Also when you check the DVD structure, the first chapter (in my defaults 5 min) is OK, all the others are reported at 0 length.

When using DVDShrink it says the main movie is 5 min and the rest is unreferenced material. Smartripper can't load the disk either.

The only way is to open the VOB file(s) separately, with or without preprocessing for editing (I usually don't since I only cut extra footage but I tried and it works OK)

Since DVDShrink and Smartripper choke also, this is a videorecorder problems and not a Videostudio issue. PowerDVD and the videorecorder have no problems with theses disks.

Again direct recording from tuner to DVD gives no problem.

This may or may not be the same problem as yours.

The DVD videorecorder is a Packard-Bell "Easy"
This my understanding of it.
I have been proven wrong on several occasions in my life. It's not going to improve.

I have tried all of the above suggestions and suggestions from this topics: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=21137

Except for the rollback of any MS XP updates. I haven't had any updates in the last couple of weeks and besides --- I am afraid to do this because I don't want to screw up my computer.

I see that others are having the exact problem - I am curious if any of the solutions in this topic or in the link provided will clear their issue up.

Right now I am dead in the water with VS10+.

Any other ideas? Thanks in advance for trying to help me.

VideoReDo and Womble both have tools to fix some MPEG problems. Both also offer free trials.

Intervideo DVD Copy can copy DVDs to various formats. (Although it's from the same parent company, its DVD import function seems different from Video Studio's.)

Here are a couple of FREE programs you can experiment with:

VOB 2 MPG (Rips DVDs to an MPEG file)
SUPER (Universal conversion program that might be able to convert MPEG to WMV)

Ok... I downloaded the vob2mpg and the super programs...... but I still have the problem.

I am still getting the exact same error and this is what my log says:

One good thing is that 1 o f every 5 tries I am now able to import the video/dvd BUT when I use the multi clip, I get the same exact error as stated above 100% of the time.

I have tried various DVD-/+RW DVD+R etc. etc. but no matter what I get the above errors.

I have followed the instructions on completely removing the VS10+ and reinstalling and even installing it in a different directory.

I have searched my puter for additional copies of the mpegin.dll but I have two of the files, one in Ulead photo and one for VS10+ both the same version.

I even d/l from these forums this file and installed as directed: h264vdechpdll.dl

I am dead in the water... I do have PowerDirector but honestly, I really do not like that product at all.... I would much prefer to use VS10+.

Is there mayabe a newer version of the mpegin.dll? I have seen many people with the same exact issues as I have, could it be that the dll is messed up?

Maybe a new version of this mpegin.dll or an older version that VS10+ installs will work?

Your thoughts?

I don't think your dead in the water but your mpeg2 file is. It simply has some small corruption in it. You need to repair it first. That was the first reply to your post. This is very common with mpeg2 video. They play, but editing them is another story.

Maybe VS can repair it by exporting to a new file with the same attributes and disabling smart_render.
You can also download the trial version of VideoRedo and fix the corruption.
Then use the repaired mpeg file to perform conversions or edits.

It is most likely a corrupt video file but just in case you have a corrupted mpegin.dll you can download 8 different versions from this zip file:

I am lost please forgive but I am fairly new to this. I may not be repairing correctly.

I opened my dvd file and encoded it through the program. Is this correct?

I most likely am not doing anything about this right way. What I do is record meetings from a gov channel on my dvd recorder and then finalize that dvd and plop it into my puter and then import it into VS10. From there I edit it and then convert it to .wmv. From there I convert the final edited version it to .swf for progressive d/l on my website and use WIMPY as the shell.

Like I said, I am real new to this video stuff so I go through some added steps to get my videos viewable on my website.

Should I be doing something different when rendering in VS10?

BTW: I really thank you a lot for all the info you are providing me. It's very much appreciated.

Thank you so much for the d/l. Is there any particular one or order that I should try?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

I think your workflow may need reviewing.
After you import the mpeg2 file from your dvd VideoStudio asks to adjust the project properties to match the imported video, correct?
I hope so, if not perform this manually by right clicking on the video and select media properties.
Then set your project properties to equal the mpeg2 source video.
Perform all your editing on the mpeg2 file, after your done then goto Share -> Create Video File -> Same as Project Setttings.
Render a new file (hopefully without errors).
Start a new project and insert that new rendered mpeg2 video.
Use the new mpeg2 file to create your wmv video.

I would give this method a try. Maybe perform a repair to VS10 before doing this so your working with it's proper files if you have replaced some with different versions.
Importing and working with dvd recorders can become somewhat of an art because they all record differenly.

It also helps to post your dvd recorder make & model, what mode you recorded at and the "Properties" of the mpeg2 file your editing on the timeline.
Some dvd recorders use a framesize of 704. VS uses 720, if you don't change the project settings to equal the source material this can cause problems depending on how complex you edit the mpeg2 file.
