DVD set-up and burning questions
I just finished a 1hr 22min compilation of the old family movies and I encountered a few new questions:
1.) When I rendered my project into a final DVD-format file prior to burning, I found it was 20% too large to put on a single sided disk. If I burn my project to a double sided disk likely be playable in most DVD players? Most computers? (Assuming I keep all the file settings as recommended for DVD burning).
2.) I have imported a bunch of music files as background for this production. They were previously ripped from the CD onto my hard drive and they are now in WAV format. It seems to stretch out rendering time to have these converted into Dolby digital 2 channel format when the project is rendered. (There is no audio on the original video, so nothing needs to be mixed; it's just a question of trancoding the audio from one format to another.) Is there a recommended best practice as to what file format I should use when bringing in a lot of new audio to a project that is destined for DVD?
3. I have figured out how to change the thumbnail associated with a clip, as per page 116 of the manual. But it seems that when I have rendered the whole file to DVD format prior to burning the disk, and when I am then adding chapter points during the burning stage as per pages 120-121 of the manual, that it is no longer possible to change the thumbnail associated with each chapter, since the chapters are no longer separate clips. This is very disappointing. Is there any way to set up a different thumbnail for each chapter in a DVD?
4. I notice that all the templates for DVD burning which provide chapter names only (as opposed to names and thumbnails) display at most 3 chapters per page, so a menu may need quite a few pages. Are there any templates available that allow 12 or more chapter names on a single page? This is particularly important if I can't change the thumbnail, as per question 3 above.
5.)Does VS10+ support the use of an external jog shuttle such as this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/control ... ype=search
or this: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/powermate/. The tiny on screen jog wheel is not great for my fat fingers.
Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions.

Rendering the project using 6000 kbps 'constant' will allow 90 minutes to fit a single layer dvd.

I use Wav files rendered to Digital Dolby.
Although you cannot hear the sound the audio track may exist, right click the video and select properties, If the properties show audio, then mute the video clip. This will not alter the render times, but may get rid of any background hiss or clicks.

There are two ways, one from the main timeline and one by double clicking the thumbnail. . Are you accessing the chapter menu, Click the down arrow adjacent to the 'Currently Display menu' Change it to the chapter page, double click the thumbnail, a 'start position' window shows

VS 9 uses 12 thumbnails, this template was available on the forum a while ago, only for the thumbnail template. Use Ulead Photo Impact to create menu templates

Most Dual-Layer DVD's are DVD+R Type.1.) When I rendered my project into a final DVD-format file prior to burning, I found it was 20% too large to put on a single sided disk. If I burn my project to a double sided disk likely be playable in most DVD players? Most computers? (Assuming I keep all the file settings as recommended for DVD burning).
The dvd player must be capable of playing Dvd+R Dvd's.
In VS if you create an ISO file of the dvd, and your burner supports changing a Dvd's "BookType" you could burn a "Dual Layered" 8.5 gig dvd using Nero.
When using Nero and burning a Dvd+R dvd changing the "BookType" to "DVD-ROM" will produce a dvd that plays in almost all players. In Nero you change the "BootType" to DVD-ROM under the burner selection -> Options, prior to burning the dvd.

I was able to do it using the double click method you describe above. But what is the method for changing the thumbnail from the main timeline? Is there any way to set up a different thumbnail for each chapter in a DVD?

Sorry, please explain
Hi, Trevor.
I do appreciate your help with this.
Sorry for being dense, but it is just not working for me. Please see the picture below. I think I am doing what you suggest, but I am not seeing the option to change thumbnail. What am I doing wrong?

Bordwidr,
That's the Edit module, you can't change the thumbnail there. In the burn module (Share>Create Disc), when you insert a video clip into the timeline for burning a disc, you can right-click on clip and there is the option to Change Thumbnail. Click on the image to enlarge..

Thanks for helping me with this --
but (and this is directed to the programmers... not to you) does it really have to be this hard?
Generally accepted user interface design principles call for making things as modeless as possible.
It should be possible to right-click on any clip at any time and get the "change thumbnail" option, just as you can right-click on any file name (under windows) at any time and get the "rename" option.
end of rant.

Hi David
There seems to have been a little confusion here. I understood your question to be relating to ¡¥chapter points¡¦ on a Dvd.
Thanks Ron for clearing up the point.
Ok
When working in the edit stage there is a library, indicated in your post to the right of the preview screen
You cannot change the thumbnail view.
BUT you can change the thumbnail name.
Click the white/grey name and edit. This only changes the thumbnail name and not the file on the hard drive.
This will help identifying the thumbnails.
To locate any clip on the hard drive ¡Vright click and select properties. See file name.
Timeline
Looking at the timeline I see you are displaying the Name of the Clip, shown in grey.
You CAN change this view.
File Preferences¡XClip Display Mode¡XThumbnail Only will display the frames.
Hope that Helps
