Power Loss while converting to MPEG

Post by Fred S »

I've been happily using VS10 for several months now, but since yesterday whenever I try to save as MPEG (Share-Create Video File) my system is crashing. In fact it just loses power suddenly as if there had been a power cut, with no warning messages! This usually happens about 10-15 minutes in. I've tried saving as AVI and this seems fine, so only seems to occur when saving as MPEG. I have not experienced any other problems using any other software.

Anyone any ideas what could be causing this and why it has started happening all of a sudden?

Fred,
Before you start to troubleshoot by re-installing programs and all the rig_a_ma_row do some simple steps first.

Open the computer and make sure the cpu fan is working and clean dust from the ventilation holes, make sure the fans are working (if any).
Just make sure the cpu isn't running hot before trying to repair the problem, via software.
If all looks good then the first I would do is perform a Repair to VS10 by going to add/remove programs.

I've had a look and the CPU fan seems to be working fine. Can't see any other fans.

I have already restored my machine to an earlier version (using Acronis True Image), and have installed VS10 fresh to this. Still have the same problem.

The fan may be spinning but not at full speed. Try removing the fan, check the heatsink (The thing under the fan) for a build up of dust fluff etc and clean it out. Then inspect the fan and clean it with a dry paint brush and vacuum cleaner.

Also check any other fans - in particular the holes at the back of the computer for clogging. What you have described is a classic symptom of over heating.

I've now done exactly what you recommend and was able to successfully create two successive MPEGs without any problems, so (fingers crossed) it looks like this has fixed the issue.

Thanks for your help

If that power issue still happens, check the power supply in your system. It might be possible the power supply is going to fail soon.

If check the fan and the heatsink fixed the issue, you can ignore my post.
