Excuse me for joining this thread but I have had the exact same problem as clapperboard. Trialing WinDVD and Powerdvd the PC crashes /freezes on closing the app after playing DVD's. I have an Nforce 2 board XP Pro SP2 and ATI 9600XT card. also installed all the latest drivers but the problem still persists.Would very much appreciate any advice or solution to this problem. I was wondering if it may be a conflict with Nero .I currently have Nero7 Premium installed ,will try uninstalling and see if it helps. Will let you know

If you remove WinDVD in your system and the problem is solved, then it might be a issue with WinDVD and you could report it to InterVideo Tech Support.

If it still happens after you remove WinDVD, then it's something else wrong in your system. For that you need a PC expert nearby you to help.

I don't think I explained myself very well .The problem happens when using (stopping) WinDVD and PowerDVD , in fact when I enable hardware acceleration the DVD/movie usually freezes after a couple of seconds. if I uncheck hardware acceleration the PC freezes after stopping WinDVD. Nerovision works fine wether I have WiDVD installed or not.
Strangely enough I installed WinDVD on Vista that I'm dual booting and have no problem.

Hi Bossa,
Now I see you are using ATi Radeon. From my experience with my ATi Radeon 9550 and Vista, I found some versions of the ATi Vista driver will cause that issue. If the latest driver could not solve the issue, you might need to wait until they (both ATi and InterVideo) fix the issue.
I would suggest you report the problem to both ATi and InterVideo and see if there will be a solution on this.
Hope this helps.

Due to the symptom you described it's possible there is an conflict between the display driver and WinDVD / PowerDVD.bossa wrote:I don't think I explained myself very well .The problem happens when using (stopping) WinDVD and PowerDVD , in fact when I enable hardware acceleration the DVD/movie usually freezes after a couple of seconds. if I uncheck hardware acceleration the PC freezes after stopping WinDVD. I think your right I'm using an ATI 9600XT with the latest drivers. Funny how its Ok with my Vista drive. I uninstalled Nero to see if there was a conflict but made no difference (thought as much). No worries will email Tech support to ATI/Intervideo and get them to work for thier money hehe
Cheers Steve
Will update when I have some info.

Probably not, on one machine using XP with SP2 installed I couldn't get Windvd nor Powerdvd to run correctly.
I reformatted the partition & re-installed XP with SP2. No problems now.
I did have a ati video card in the machine & replaced it with an NVidia card.
These programs don't cleanup after themselves,
I think you may need to re-install a clean XP_SP2 installation again.
Windows becomes fragile when you install all these programs that fail to cleanup after themselves when they un-install. It only takes one little driver/file to cause a big conflict.
With windows it's "All or None". Windows has been this way since it's development. Other operating systems can have the same problems when system conflicts occur.
