WinDvd Problem

Post by clapperboard »

I'm having trouble with WinDvd. Not while the programme is running but when it shuts down. My computer crashes. Nothing works and I have to restart it. Is this a common problem? I like the programme because of the way it interfaces with VideoStudeo 10. Will an upgrade to WINDVD 8 solve the problem?

No this is not a common problem. I've had no problems with the WinDVD included with VS10+. It certainly should not cause a full crash. What OS are you running, WinXP or Vista? Have you tried the dreaded uninstall (full, clean) of WinDVD and reinstall? Did this problem just start, have you been able to use previously? If so what other programs, or what has changed on your system since you were last able to use WinDVD without it crashing?

I don't think upgrading to WinDVD 8 will fix your problem.

Windows XP Pro SP2 with an ATI Raedon X1600 graphics card. Did a reinstall, perhaps should try a complete wipe with a registry cleanup and install again.

Still new at the game so I may have done something that shouldn't without knowing it. It didn't do it the first time I ran it. So a bit more experimentation is in order. Thanks for the help.

So that eliminates the Vista issue..;)

Also since this is an issue concerning WinDVD I'm moving it to the WinDVD forum..

Well, I've done a full reinstall and it still crashes after use. doing a full check on my system including virus check, etc., though this is the only programme that does this.

Ok I think I have the problem. It occurs when I play .vob files. maybe they are too big or there is a problem with WinVid 7 or there is something wrong with the .vob files I am playing. Or... there is something I should be doing that I am not when running these files. Any help?

Why don't you explain exactly what your doing?
If playing a vob file and having trouble where did the vob file come from? How was it created?

What does WinDvd play correctly? Can you play a standard dvd, or standard video files, then exit without crashing.
Could also be a codec conflict, either video or audio.

Just put a DVD (normal movie that you get at a retail shop.) in the drive and it began playing. WinDvd becomes the default drive. On leaving WinDvd my computer crashes. Only playing the disc nothing else. Then tried playing the .vob files separately. Crashes my computer on exit. No problem while running the programme.

On restarting the computer and playing .wmv or .avi files no crash. Seems strange. Maybe a codec, but then why does it run OK.

I'm new to VideoStudio so I have been experimenting. No problem with VideoStudio and I had only used WinDvd to play the DVD. Copied a .vob file onto the hard drive to see if it could be by some strange fact my DVD player. The same thing happened when running the .vob file. At any rate will be experimenting only with .wmv .avi and the other files till i can resolve it.

What happened if you go to http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html to download and install the latest driver for your display card?

If you right clicks on the video window and select Options->Video, what options are checked (or not checked) in the Hardware Acceleration section?

Ok, just come across something. It is not WinDvd. I downloaded Cyberlink's trial PowerDvd and the same thing happens. No problem if I am using Windows Media Player 11, though. Seems like something on my machine that causes a crash at exit. Any suggestions will help. An old Cyberlink PowerDvd worked.

At least it appears to put WinDvd in the clear. Any suggestions.

Funny, some users that have WMP 11 report problems with other software.

In one of the readme files from ulead they say before installing WinDvd make sure to un-install the ulead dvd player for proper installation of WinDvd.
Found this information in the MovieFactory 6 Read-Me file.
Maybe will help.
I had one machine couldn't get windvd to run correct and PowerDvd wouldn't run at all. Ended up formatting the partition and re-installing windows.
After that, no problems.

Well, hoping that I won't have to reinstall Windows, but it will be a last resort.
