DVD MF 5+, can't import NERO recoded files

Post by heinz-oz »

I am about to give up on this. A friend of mine has a Music DVD of his favoured artist. He asked me if I could make an audio only CD of that to play in his car CD player.

I imported this DVD into MF and am getting nowhere. Every time I make a selection to the settings, the program disappears just to pop up again hours later with nothing, it hangs but can be closed by clicking on it's close button.

I have copied the VIDEO_TS folder to my HDD also and tried to import from there. Same result. I also tried other DVD's and have no problems with these.

The DVD folder plays with no apparent problems in media player. DVD Shrink doesn't find anything wrong with it.

As a final resort I used NERO recode to only recode the main movie to another folder on my HDD. Worked very quickly, the VIDEO_TS folder is there and can be read with WIN Explorer and the video can be played with NERO ShowTime, no problem. WIN MediaPlayer only sees the folder and cannot open it, the same as DVD MF 5+. I removed the read only attribute from this folder and all files, still nothing.

Any ideas guys?

I have a PS to the above. When I checked again just now, the folder has a read only restriction on it which I cannot remove :?: Not that it matters much because all I want to do is read this st*pid folder with MF5.

When I try to open MF again, nothing happens at all, the program doesn't start.

In Win MP I changed the file option from the default to *.* All files and my BUP, IFO and VOB files appeared. Now I can play the video too. Weird.

After a reboot, the launcher starts DVD MF again but I can only navigate to the folder which contains my video. The OK button is greyed out and I can only click on cancel.

It may be something NERO does to these files or the folder. When I open the folder again in MP, the file type selector is on Media files [all types] and the browser window is empty. They reappear only if I select Any file [*.*] in the file type selector. What gives?

Heinz,
I also had trouble importing or trying to re-use a video dvd that Nero Recode has produced. Maybe that's the reason it works so fast when re-coding.

Have you tried VS10+ under insert video & select VOB. VS10 will extract the mpeg file (hopefully). You may have to splice some of the audio though if one of the videos spans over 2 vobs.

Worst case, if your really stuck. Playback the DVD on a player & re-record the audio tracks. That might not take to long, record the whole dvd. Then pull that into an editor, mark the in/out's and re-save each track. Or, record each track separately.
Audicity or Nero's audio editor is great for doing this.
Actually you should be able to do it in the computer, play the dvd and record the audio tracks. Select Wav/pcm as the recording input for auducity.

I have tried VS10+, MSP8 and DVD MF5+, no go.
Reformatted my C:\ drive and started with a clean install of WIN XP Pro SP2 and only installed DVD MF 5, MSP 8, PI 12, Nero6 reloaded, DVDShrink and DiskeeperPro.

Tweaked my swap file settings and made sure no unnecessary clutter runs in the background.

I'm not going to install VS10+ to this machine again either because I'm unlikely to ever use it and had blamed the installation of it for my troubles. After a clean install it's pretty clear now that it was a wrong assumption but still, I won't be using it for my video stuff and, hence, will not install it here.

I think your other option might be the best yet. Have thought about that too on several ocassions but didn't want to admit that I'm stumped here doing it the "elegant" way.

Made another attempt to import the main video VOB files from the DVD disk. Hours later, I walked away in between because the program seemed to have hung but from past experience I know that it might only appear that way, I have the program stuck in the first step of the importation process. The program window is blank but the audio plays in the background. I cannot stop it and video did not show in the preview window.

This is so weird. I'm going to let this piece of s**t run it's course and if it takes all week.

While typing this, the preview window appeared again, the progress bar shows the play head moving but no other program interface bits are showing, except for the bottom bar with the Next> and Close buttons as well as the project settings icons. The preview window is black and the sound plays.

I clicked on the stop button below the progress bar, the hour glass appears briefly but nothing happens, it keeps playing.

Just now, not sure how long after I started this, the program window is showing in all its glory again. Clicked on the preferences icon and the hour glass is displayed, nothing happens, the audio is still playing.

Windows Task Manager shows two instances of Ulead DVD MovieFactory - select source and import, Status: Not responding

CPU usage 30%, PF usage 265MB, the system, at present has 1.5 GB DDR400 RAM fitted.

Update

tried on several occassions to stop this program or get on to the next step, to no avail.
If I click on any of the buttons, the program window may go blank. The audio still plays. Right now Task Manager reports one instance of MF as running.

I just now clicked on the stop button to stop the preview (without video) and it did stop. Task manager immediately reports this program to be not responding. Just great.

I have found that after using any type of program to resize or redo a dvd such as Nero_Recode or Shrink the resulant dvd mpeg2 files are hard to work with or impossible to work with.
It's not true copy protection but recode will write a 4.4 or 4.5 Gig DVD. So if you try copying the dvd using standard tools the copy fails.

Also discovered this by accident, on my panasonic dvd recorder if I protect the video so it can't be accidentally erased or edited on the recorder. After importing the whole video from the dvd-ram disk it doesn't play correctly in all dvd players. Remove the protection and everything works.

I haven't tried it yet but Nero has a feature in version 7 to extract the audio tracks from a dvd.
They also removed dvd decryptor from the web. If you have a copy of the program it can be used as a nice utility program to read dvd in different modes.

Re-recording the dvd audio conventionally shouldn't yield much loss.

The problem is that all the files I generated have no apparent problem when playing in WIM MediaPlayer, WIN DVD or NERO Showtime.

I give up on this. I appreciate your input.

I have often used "#1 DVD Audio Ripper" to do exactly what you want. I know it's not a Ulead program, but it works. I make mp3's then burn them onto a CD with other software. Not Nero, I don't like Nero!

I recently bought a new car with, obviously, a new CD player. This player tells me the name of each track of those CD's. Blowed if I know how it gets that info???

Thanks for the hint but his player does not play mp3. Unfortunately, once mp3, that's it, as far as I'm concerned. Nothing you can do with it after. Thanks anyway. My heart is not set on this and I have decided to tell my friend that I can't do it.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the mp3's are converted into cda's as on a normal audio CD when they are burnt with Sonic.
If you were a bit closer, I would be happy to do it for you!

With DVDMF 5 Plus or DVDMF 6 Plus:

In the launcher select Audio/Data Disc->Audio CD, you will see Ulead Burn. Now to be launched. Clicks on Convert on the tool bar then you will see the Convert Audio Files dialog to be appeared. Clicks on Add to add the vob file and set the output quality/format you want then clicks on Convert, you should see the converted audio to be appeared in the Audio CD project so you can burn it as an audio-only CD....

If that does not help (or get crashed) you need some other tools to help.

I prefer the simpler approach. You have VideoStudio so you would perhaps do this better using that.

1. Import your DVD.
2. Export the Audio as a WAV File
3. Split the Audio into its separate tracks if necessary with Audacity.
4. Create a CD with Windows Media Player.
