I am trying to determine if I would be better to install a separate sound card rather than using the Realtek onboard sound on my Gigabyte motherboard.
I suspect that it (onboard sound) uses main memory and I (at times) continue to experience problems of VS10 crashing and that always seems to occur when I am doing something which results in both video and audio being played as well as reading off the hard drive PLUS I have noticed that whenever I am playing a video clip OR audio clip using Windows Media player the display ALWAYS freezes for a few seconds (a few seconds after it starts to play - the sound keep playing ok) and during that time I cannot even shut down Windows media player or hit the 'stop button')

I'm no expert but I have had problems with Realtek on board sound. I had clicks and pops in my sound from DV-AVI video clips when these were burned to DVD. AC97 (Realtek) seem to have a bandwidth issue on the PCI bus. It's using far too much of the available bandwidth. At least that is my understanding of it. After I had put in a PCI soundcard, no more problems.
