I am pleased with the Digital-8 movies I can shoot and edit withing VS8; however, with the advent of Widescreen 780P and 1080I resolution screens, Is there an "upgraded" camera that will allow me to take higher resolution movies that can be edited in VS?
To go strictly "HD" right now seems rather expensive to find both the hardware and the software it would need to produce a HD video. Now when we watch a Digital-8 movie at a 4:3 aspect ratio on a 50" Plasma screen, we can begin to see the limits of both my Digital-8 and VS-8 software program.
Is there anything I can do to improve colour, resolution beyond my current Sony Digital 8 and my VS8? Thanking you in advance.
Sony DCR-TRV310 NTSC Camera: Is There a Better Choice?

I watch my 4:3 Standard Definition Videos in 4:3 aspect ratio on a HDTV in the Normal Mode. There are bars on the left & right sides. In my opinion viewing them in their native mode looks nicer than zooming them out to 16:9. Everything is proportional and looks correct. Otherwise it's squashed heads and big butts.
If you want to be economical & replace yours with another good Standard Def cam I would choose one with at least a 1/3 CCD and shoots true 16:9.
True 16:9 is where all of the CCD is being used to capture the video. Canon & panasonic both make them.
When you create the video file I find a higher video bit rate of 8000kbs or higher (if your dvd player can handle the high bit rates) yields better video on large screens.
I would guess that HD cams will come down when enough HDTV's are sold. Only a matter of time.
If you do plung for a HighDef cam I recommend one that records in the mpeg2 video mode so you can work with the videos (VS10+ is a good choice).
When you see HD-Cams that record in the AVCHD Video Mode (H264) the file sizes of the HD video are smaller but there's no practical way to work with that video format yet.
So if you want to create a Standard DVD from one of the AVCHD recording cams you would have to use it's internal downconvert hardware function IF it has one built in (I do not know).
The Sony cams that record HD-Mpeg2 Video Format have a built-in down convert to standard defintion or you can do it in software. You can also record in the standard defintion mode with the sony cams.
Whatever you buy today will be cheaper in 6 months (or discontinued).

I don't think that it necessarily your camera or VS8, limiting you. It's the limitations of the DVD standard. I don't know at what bit rates you encode your video but that has the biggest influence on the visual quality of your creations. How many hours do you cramp on one DVD? At what bitrate? Try to stay around 1 hour duration and encode full screen at not less than 7000 kbps and you might be surprised of what you get already.usafesc wrote:....Is there anything I can do to improve colour, resolution beyond my current Sony Digital 8 and my VS8?
