DVD Audio differs from Preview Audio
I have a Video which includes audio from the original video as well as some SmartSound tracks. It plays flawlessly in the different preview modes, but when I export it or burn a DVD of it, the SmartSound portion of the audio is missing. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Steps taken
I have successfully created simpler projects and they turned out great. I started capturing from our Sony camera, and the audio turns out just fine. I put in transitions... and came up with a file, but did not like the sound of the original tape so I wanted to add some music to the video, which also seems to work well, again only in "Preview" or Project Playback. When I try to "Create a video file" or to burn it to a DVD, my wonderful music tracks disappear. I also think the video file can get completely out of sync with the audio portion of the project.
Thanks for your help,
hopefully that explains the situation.
Just tonite I captured a single video file and nicely superimposed some music and output it to a video file. That worked perfectly, though I did not try burning to a DVD too. I could send you that, but it's 54MB! The one that does not work is longer still
!
Thanks, SA

What format are your source video files? (If it's an AVI file, we need more information. AVI is a container format, and it can contain anything.)
Perhaps it's very short in duration, and/or it's highly compressed. If you are using one of the MPEG-4 variations, you may have to convert it to something less-compressed before bringing it into Video Studio. The highly compressed formats seem to cause lots of trouble.
That's rather small for a video file! A DVD can hold 4.7GB (4700MB). AVI/DV files (from a mini-DV camera) are 13GB per hour, and they have to be compressed to MPEG-2 to fit onto a DVD (and to comply with the DVD spec)....but it's 54MB!

SA,
When your capturing from the Sony Camcorder what format is the video file you have captured. Sounds like your capturing directly to the mpeg2 format. Only guessing because you are maybe having audio sync issues.
When you goto Share -> Create Video file UNCheck the "Perform Smart Render" box.
Also under Preferences (F6 HotKey), make sure "Show message when inserting first video clip into the Timeline" is checked" ON
This way your project properties match the source video properties.
If you can when using the Sony Cam I would capture to a DV.avi file (Type-1). In the capturing screen change the capture format to DV.

The point I highlighted indicates to me that you must be a novice to DVD creation. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a novice, we all were at one point in time. You must understand though, there is an awful lot to learn for you. There is an absolute plethora of sometimes conflicting compression codecs out there. Some are accepted by all video standards, others are not accepted by NTSC, some are so highly compressed that they are rendering the video useless for DVD creation. The DVD standard stipulates a file size >1 GB for a compliant DVD disk. Your 54MB is a mere scratch on the disk.uleadsda wrote:....

In order to find out why you have this problem we need to know at least what the source file properties are, video as well as audio, NTSC or PAL?

I only mention the 54MB file as large in terms of sending over the internet. It is a quite brief (2 minute+ video). Thanks so much for all your thoughts! I just thought it strange that Preview was great but that production of the DVD/Video file was off.
The file that I have trouble with is about 20 minutes long and 407MB.
A novice I am, but hopefully I can learn what I need to!
Thanks, SA

Even a 20 minute file coming out at 'only' 407 MB sounds a little small, depending on its properties. And that of course is again begging the question of what exactly those properties are! If it were a high quality DVD-compatible mpeg-2, for instance, a 20 minute file would be closer to 1.3 GB. And if it were DV format, it would be closer to 4 GB or more.
So please right click on the problem file within VS -- either in the timeline or in the Library pane -- select Properties and copy them down here.

You are correct!
I captured the video to NTSC DVD in MPEG-2 Video format. I don't think I have the original video anymore, so I can't re-capture it that I know of.
Is there a further update to VS, as if it processed the video for the burn/render the same way it processed the Preview, things would be fine.
Otherwise, should I try to convert each MPEG somehow? That also would take a fair amount of work as I would loose all the post-processing...
I have VS 10.0.0110..2 Plus
Thanks so much!

Any ideas?
Thanks so much for the prior suggestions. Am I out of luck?
VS is confused by MPEG-2?
Thanks, SA

You still have not told us the actual properties of the video. Simply saying 'NTSC DVD' covers a fairly wide range of possibilities. I am also not sure what you mean when you say 'export'...
Also, once you had edited or previewed, did you go straight to Share > Create Disc? This is possible, but it causes some people problems such as those you are experiencing.
In such cases, our recommended procedure is instead, after your finish editing, to go to Share > Create Video File > DVD. This will then create a totally new DVD-compatible mpeg-2 of the whole project (including, hopefully, the SmartSound tracks). Then if you play that new track back and everything is there, you can then move on to Share > Create Disc.
