Stick on labels or direct printing? OR, Lightscribe?

Post by greg mgm »

I'd like to either print or LS a photo and title onto my CD's and DVD's. Is direct printing the way to go? I'm not sure if labels are a good idea with the heat the DVD is subjected to. What are you guys using? Thanks!

I have gone away from paper lables for a long time already. I use a Canon iP5000 bubble jet printer which can print straight to printable CD/DVD media.

Did that printer come with a separate cd holding tray? Maybe I could order one from your end of the world. Canon told me they don't have a cd printer available in the US. You guys get all the cool stuff!!

The printer needs to be designed to accept CD media for printing. All the major companies, AFAIK, have models to print to CD. It would be easy enough to buy one outside the US and have it shipped. The problem would start after that though. There are only a limited number of countries running on 60 Hz power supply and all I know have at least 230V. Here in Australia it's 240 V, 50 Hz.

Power supply is not a problem. Contact the local dealer of Canon and it could be solved.

If you wish to have a colorful CD/DVD label, printers with label printing support is the way to go. You can choose Canon or EPSON. I know EPSON R series have the support for printable CD/DVD media.

If you do not care about having a gray-scale CD/DVD label, you can try Light-Scribe. However it's not easy to find LS media in some countries. For example, in Taiwan where I live it's not easy to buy LS media and they are a little expensive. It's much easier to find printable CD/DVD media and it's cheaper.

Hope this helps.

Didn't think about the power difference although I could probably solve it. Easier yet would be to buy an Epson R series which I saw in our local stores today. Prices on those are very reasonable, and within my budget (this month anyway) Thanks to you two for the replies.

I saw an Epson R260 on sale today and bought it. Printing to CD is very easy, and the results are excellant. It takes about 1 minute to print a cd. Thanks again.
