Rendering Query

Post by Howell »

This is not a problem as such but an observation.
Just come back from my video club where we were experimenting with render times. We rendered a five minute dvd file at various settings, DVD,VCD MPEG 2.
However, for one reason or another we rendered the same piece of video at the DVD setting twice. When we opened up the properties of both files the size was different and found that although the video settings were the same the audio was LPCM on one and MPEG 2 audio on the second. So we then rendered the same video a few times and found that each video we created was alternating between LPCM and MPEG 2.
Just wondering if anyone had experienced this and if anyone knows why?
As I say it is not a problem.

Many thanks

The most simple explanation, based on all the info you supplied (not) is that you didn't pay attention to the settings in the rendering engine. Every time I render a video, I set the sound to be Dolby AC3 and that's exactly what I get.

That you get different file sizes with mpeg or LPCM audio doesn't surprise me at all. LPCM is very high bitrate and uses a lot more space than any of the other formats.

Thanks for that and appreciate your comment but I just chose the DVD setting when creating the file.
Since then I have tried it again only this time I edited different 5 minute sections and used the DVD setting to create the file and each time it was LPCM audio. However, when I repeated the video created from the same section a number of times it then went back to alternating between LPCM and MPEG 2 audio again.
I then created a dvd file from the same section again but after rendering the first video I shut Videostudio down then opened up Videostudio again and then created another file at the dvd setting of the same footage then each one was LPCM audio.
I would also add that the chances of someone actually repeatedly createing a dvd file continuously like I have done are pretty slim but it was just something that I found purely by accident.

Hi Howell

There could be many reasons for this change in audio properties.
I do not believe that VS is arbitrary changing the settings that you select.

Once you have made your selection, the Create Video File window shows the properties in the lower left panel. These settings will be used to render the video.
Scroll down to identify the audio properties.

When you select Share Create Video File you are given several options.

Same as Project Settings:-Be aware that when inserting the first video file to the timeline VS may change the project settings to match the video file.
If you render another video file using the same project then the properties may not match. This is not normally a problem, unless you are running several tests, it is best to start a NEW project for each render.
If you are testing render times then it is essential to start a new project, otherwise Smart Render may kick in.

Same as First Video Clip:-Is probably the best option, ensuring that both properties are the same.

Pal/Ntsc DV
Will produce an Avi file 13Gb per hour. (DV-Avi)

Pal/Ntsc-DVD
Will provide a compatible dvd template, suitable for up to 60 minutes of video (4.3Gb)

Mpeg 1/2 options allow for frame based and pc viewing.

Customise:-Will allow you to create your own templates.

So run the tests again, each time starting a new project
Check the properties in the Create Video File window prior to hitting the save button.

Does the rendered file have the same audio settings as shown in the window.
