Can't Change Burner Settings In VS8
Ok, I'm posting again...with a big problem. When I go to burn my file to DVD... I can only get to 8x speed now...yet the other day I could get to 4x. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is this a bug? Please help. Thanks, Dan

Hi
That should not cause you any problems.
Are you using the same make/type of disc?
When you use blank disc the drive reads the type and selects the speed.
VS defaults to the Max speed of the disc.
Using a different disc may alter the max speed.
You can select a slower speed than detected but not higher.
If there is a problem reading the disc info then I would suspect your burner rather than VS

Burner Settings
Trevor,
My burner has NO PROBLEM in reading the disc. I'm using memorex dvd+r 8x discs...is that the problem? In reading on this subject, I thought that you were suppose to burn at 1 or 2x speed at the maximum, yet when I drop down do the settings box I can only lower my burner speed to 8x. What speed does everyone burn in and does it make a difference at all if I use + or - Dvd media? Thanks again, Dan

I am slightly confused. 8x is a much faster speed than 4 x, let alone 2x. If your burner will support 8x and you are using 8x discs, then you should be able to use 8x with no problem and it will produce your final DVD that much more quickly.
The 'older' recommendation to use 1x or 2x as a maximum for burning, to an extent still applies in the sense that the slower the speed, the less possibility there is of problems creeping into the burn. But if you have one, first use an 8x RW disc and see if your project burns correctly at 8x speed. If it does, then go ahead and use that speed on a 8x +R or -R disc. I personally have a DVD burner which will support up to 16x (wish I could find and afford 16x discs!!). But I use a tried and true brand of printable 4x blanks and consistently burn successful DVDs at 4x speed... When 8x discs become cheaper here in Australia, I will probably use them and burn at 8x too.

Hi Thanks Ken
Spot on there Ken, but I cannot understand why 'sportswizdan' cannot reduce the speed below 8x.
Unless Memorex have made a disc the only burns at the one speed, I doubt that!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a freeware program DVD Identifier. This reads the manufactures info on the disc, make, type, speed etc. It also shows the different speeds that the disc is capable of using.
