AIW9000 Bit the Dust
Aloha Forum!
Our AIW9000 decided it didn't want to work anymore. It *may* still be under warranty but i was wondering if anyone could recommend another tuner card that will work with VS10? I'm leaning towards Hauppauge. I've always vowed to let this AIW9000 be the last ATI tuner card i get, but since have mastered the driver installation and all our AIW9000/9800 cards have been great. Is anyone on this forum using a PVR series card? I have been looking at the PVR-350 (NON-MCE version).
Can anyone tell me about the recorded video quality? I do like the hardware encoder but would no doubt miss some of the stuff we actually like about ATI. For instance, it works great in VS10.
Please forgive me if this is in the wrong area... I do need this to work with VS10 however. Thats why i bring it up here.
Thanks for your help!

I have a Hauppauge 350 PVR card and also in my other computer a Hauppage HVR1300 (Hybrid card)
Both work fine and record in high quality MPEG2.
The newer card is the HVR1300 which handles both analogue TV and also Digital TV. The one drawback I found with the digital TV is that it records the MPEGs with a very high bit rate 15000 which is too high for normal DVD use and it takes quite a long time to 'downgrade it' to a smaller bit rate.
Here in the U.K. analogue TV is slowly being turned off and replaced by digital and so at some point in the next few years I will have to dump my PVR350 in favour of one of the Digital cards.

Aloha Steve! And thank you very much for the quick reply. Well, all we've got here for now is Analog cable. However, tv has the ATSC tuner but only as far as 480i. Nevertheless somehow it receives the Music Choice? I'm wondering if we could get the Music Choice on the 'puter with that card?sjj1805 wrote:I have a Hauppauge 350 PVR card and also in my other computer a Hauppage HVR1300 (Hybrid card)

However, all that we see on their site is the 1600 model of that hybrid card. For now, we probably would be satisfied with the 350. Now the obvious question is WHICH VIDEO CARD should we get with it? We've emailed Hauppauge to see if they would recommend one for us. What do you think would be stable and compatible? Unable to spend a lot but need stability.
Thanks Again for such Great Help

Manzano808,
VS10 doesn't capture from the Hauppauge cards very well. MovieFactory 5 does but if you decide to go with a Hauppauge card it's best to use the software supplied with that card to capture video.
Sounds like you need a new video display card along with capturing?
I have a ATI AIW9000Pro AGP Video card I don't use anymore, captures nice in ATI software or VS. If your in the US email me if interested. I replaced the 9000pro with a HDTV NVidia card.
You should know that many of the newer ATI capture cards are using hardware chipsets to encode the video. Many programs cannot use these cards to capture, theatre 550/650 so you have to use ATI's software.

Steve, something confuses me about this card. Picture shows a "Video in". Wouldn't that be a Video Out the way it is on the AIW? What am i missing here? Would you give us a hint of how the sound is configured with an Audigy 4?sjj1805 wrote:I have a Hauppauge 350 PVR card
We're desparate to get something soon because until we get this solved, it's an expensive paper weight. ugh...
Thanks again.
P.S. I am looking at the EVGA 256-A8-N313-LX GeForce FX5500 256MB for the video. Seems stable and inexpensive. What do you think with the 350? Like to stay away from ATI for a chance.

You may be better off getting the HVR1600 rather than the PVR350.
The PVR350 is analogue only - which obviously isn't currently a problem but look to the future, it is inevitable that digital is going to come along at some time in the future. The HVR cards handle analogue and also digital.
When recording analogue you have control over bit rates.
When recording a digital source it is fixed.
I noticed that even with analogue the reception was superior on the HVR compared to the PVR.
Regarding video cards. the PVR will accept PCI, PCI-e and AGP.
The HVR is more fussy and does not accept the PCI (without the e) for watching live TV though it does record it correctly for later playback.
If you have a PCI-e or AGP card then live TV is fine.
If you only have a PCI graphics card then you can still watch live TV but it begins to stutter after about 20 minutes.
If like me you also have a satelite TV system then you need to plump for a card that also has RCA inputs so that you get the best possible picture from your satelite system by way of RCA leads (red/white/yellow).
The two cards I have do not have outputs, they have inputs and accept coaxial, RCA, Svideo and also FM Radio.

Aloha etech6355!! I tried PM'ing you but keep getting the "debug" error. Could you let me know if it was delivered? Forgive me for PM but didn't see email address.etech6355 wrote:Sounds like you need a new video display card along with capturing? I have a ATI AIW9000Pro AGP Video card I don't use

"Video In" ??!! Duhhhhhh sorry
Sorry Steve! I MEANT "LINE IN" ?? Thats what I couldn't understand on the PVR-350 card. I've always connected the "Line Out" from the AIW cards directly to the "Line in" on the Sound card.
I have looked at the manual but still can't figure out what they are doing to get sound?
