DVD MovieFactory 6 Plus - CRASHING (help)

Post by XiRoCCo »

Hi,

I just purchased, downloaded and installed DVDMF6+ on my IBM clone (1.9GHz Intel, Over 1TB of disk space, 1GB RAM, GeForce 6600LE 256MB video card).

The "first" thing I did was click to Add Video Files. The program hangs for about 20 seconds then disappears - taking me back to the Launcher.

I had the trial version of DVDMF5+ installed, but ran through the complete uninstall instructions shown here on the forums - clearing out all temp folders, registery keys and whatnot, before installing version 6.

I am happy to supply more information if needed - please ask.

Thanks,

What file-format are your video files? Where did they come from? Did these same files work with the trial version?

I don't have MF6, but all of my crashes with Ulead programs have been caused by corrupt video files (usually MPEGs). It can be hard to tell if you've got a corrupt file, because a "bad" file will often play OK, but cause trouble when you try to edit it or make a DVD out of it.

It actually doesn't matter the format - as the program crashes when I click the button to add video files. No window opens up allowing me to browse my drive. Click - hang - crash. No files are ever accessed.

Forgot to mention in my original post - I'm running on Windows XP Pro SP2

Could be a bad download or bad installation. Hard to say.

What happens if you drag & drop the video from windows explorer directly into the MF timeline.
Seems like the window that loads video files is a standard windows programming calling routine.
Things that can interfere with that are external connected devices, networked drives that always have to re-connect. This also makes opening up 'My Computer" to see all the drives somewhat slower or a hanging situation.

Only suggestions to look for. I haven't installed 6 yet. The trial isn't available.

While I've not re-downloaded it - I have completely uninstalled it following directions here on the forums and reinstalled it with the same results.

Tried this last night - same results. The mouse turns into an hourglass and about 20 seconds later the program crashes. Tried this with numerous files to make sure there wasn't a corruption issue.

Good thought as I have three external USB hard drives. Earlier today I shut them off - rebooted and tried again - with the same results. Crash... I've posted this to Ulead tech support as well.

Thanks

I know it's a big download but would re-download again and from a command prompt perform a FC /B of the 1st download compared against the 2nd download.
FC is "File Compare", the /B switch means perform a binary comparision.
FC /B File1.exe File2.exe

I thought when you unpack the file it performs a self check to validate the integrity of the file.

I remember back a few months ago a user had all sorts of problems, after weeks on posts back & forth the outcome was a bad download.

I had trouble with MF5_Plus version until I installed Service Pack 2.
Don't know if installing service pack 2 would fix the issue.

Also before launching MF6 delete, move or rename this directory. It's the users directory and if the files get corruption the program can have problems. This directory is where the program also writes some temporary data (not all).
Sometimes in VideoStudio I'll get an error when launching. Removing this directory in VideoStudio sets the program back straight again.
Same with MovieFactory versions. If MovieFactory doesn't see this directory when launching it re-creates it again.
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead DVD MovieFactory\5.0
That was taken from a MF5 installation, yours should say 6.0

The application directory is a hidden directory.

If you don't have any other ulead products installed before re-installing I would also remove or rename the ulead directory under "Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems
I've had other versions & ulead programs conflict.

Running out of options..................

thanks for such a greatly detailed reply :) ... after talking with ulead's tech support it has been determined that they do not have enough information to troubleshoot DVD MF 6+, and recommended that I request a refund.

i did do a full re-download and there is no file corruption. i've wiped all traces of DVD MF 6+ from my computer and reinstalled from the new d/l. same results.

i was also running VS10 and after installing MF6+ VS10 stopped working and crashed upon loading (wouldn't even open up). while i could run through numerous steps to fix these (maybe) it's not worth it. when i buy software i am hopeful that it will work 'out of the virtual box' - especially with other software from the same manufacturer.

last week i wiped and reloaded my computer (winxp pro sp2) so the drive and o/s only contain the needed programs (my computer is very clean right now - running very few resident programs).

DVD MF 6+ is buggy. buyer beware. i am out looking at adobe and sony's vegas right now to see if they can offer a good solution that does not require that i take an entire day playing with the installation to 'not' make it work :).

thanks again etech6355

Hi I have the same problem. When I press the "Add media" section I get the following message:

The instruction at "oxocfc415b" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".
Click OK to terminate the program.

Any help please.

OK I found a solution to this.
Go to System Properties/advanced/Performance settings/Data Execution Prevention. On the "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" add the Ulead DVD MovieFactory. (the exe file).

Stelios - good information and good fix. unfortunately i was in need of a DVD software that worked (out of the box) and moved over to Movie Architect which works brilliantly. especially after installing DVDMF and having my VS10 crash and stop functioning all together.

Dreamworks - it was downloaded from Ulead's links which i received after purchasing the product. even tried downloading it again - with same results.

Hi,

For Sony products, please discuss them in the Sony forum. This is Ulead forum and please focus on Ulead products only, thanks.

For the crash issue of DVDMF 6, please report it to Ulead Tech Support so them can do some checks.

http://www.ulead.com/tech/techsupport.htm

Sometimes Ulead products will crash when some incompatible codec packs were installed, especially when you clicks on the Add Video button. Maybe you can also list the codec packs installed in your system to let Ulead know.

For the DEP issue, is Stelios using a AMD system? Please following the descriptions in http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=8960 to list your issue properly.

Thanks and regards,

as for the crash issue - it was reported to tech support last thursday via email, then by phone on friday. both phone and email techs gave me the same list of uninstall / reinstall steps which i've now done three or four times each with no success. they've run out of ideas. my system was "just" reloaded a few weeks back and only the drivers for my MiniDV camcorder were loaded - no additional codecs or codec packs beyond what XP and ulead have loaded.

unfortunately the 'sony' word came up due to the ulead products being a little too faulty. dvdmf 6+, in addition to not working also crashed my vs10. even if there is a fix - it has taken way too much of my time to continually work on something that should work out-of-the-box. sorry ulead - this aint workin' for me.

crashing- try opening DVDMF directly

Post by srsmedia »

I have been pulling my hair out by the handful over the past couple of days, just trying to finish one lousy simple DVD with no joy. In my efforts, I did figure out that the LAUNCHER causes more immediate crashes than if you open DVDMF6 directly...
Don't know why, but it seemed that when the LAUNCHER was running underneath of DVDMF(the way the software is set up to open via the desktop icon), the prog crashes about 99% of the time when you try to add vid files. I've found that by going to the start menu, and opening DVDMF6 without the LAUNCHER, it does not crash when loading vid files.
...However- it still crashes randomly when using virtually any other aspect of the software, so it's a moot point from where I sit...
You may want to try this, however.
