DVD WORKSHOP R.I.P. (at least for us)

Post by rasta »

with the new dvd movie factory plus 6, we can do what we need and what we hoped vaporware DWS 3 to do. That¡¬s been enough for waiting, keep on waiting those of you, maybe for easter :) .

thanks Ulead.

Movie Factory has always been a better choice for most users. I would guess that it's Ulead's most popular program!

But, Workshop users are not likely to "downgrade" to Movie Factory unless they need some of the new features like Blu-Ray or HD_DVD. We are more likely to stick with WS2 or move-up to one of the more professional authoring packages (Sony, Adobe, DVD Lab, etc.)

Movie Factory is still lacking a couple of professional features like subtitles and multiple soundtracks. I don't think it can output to DLT either. I'm not sure if DLT is still important, but I think it's less error-prone than using a "burned master" DVD. I can't fully compare both products, since I haven't used MF for awhile...

In marketing terminology, products like Workshop are known as "cash cows". It's a mature (or old) product that you can milk for cash without any additional effort.
...vaporware DWS 3 to do.
It's really not fair to call WS3 "vaporware", since AFAIK it's never been announced by ULEAD.... Maybe wishware, fantasyware... something like that?

MovieFactory 6 Plus does allow for one subtitle :)

As a more basic user, I mainly use DVDWS2 to build menus any way I want.
Can DVDMF equal this?

MovieFactory is still "wizard-driven" -- you don't have the ability to setup your menu navigation like you do in DVD Workshop 2.x

Very similar to MovieFactory, you need to look hard to find the differences.
Although perhaps now aged and does not natively support 16.9 menus and Dolby 5.1 DVD WS2 is still an excellent product, easy to learn/use where other DVD Authoring products can be more difficult.

A lot depends upon what you are attempting to achieve, If you want full control over menu and Sub Menu navigation then you need DVD Workshop, if however you are more inclined towards 16.9 Menus then you need to consider MovieFactory and/or VideoStudio.

The challenge is making what you have do what you want using lateral thinking. You can complain that the software companies are lagging behind developments in technology but that does not solve your immediate problems. You have to make the most of what you have using workrounds where necessary.

New software makes things easier by taking a lot of that lateral thinking away, but you can bet that as soon as a fix, update pack or new release hits the market, that another leap in technology will come along and before you know it we are back to square one and the questions "When is this (new thing) going to be incorporated into the software.?"

VS10 is not good for that either (DVD Authoring). I have several posts re: trying to find a replacement for DVD WS2 (see in the Workshop thread).

I'm going to be insanely busy soon and won't have time to try programs out for a while.

Here's what I know so far:

VS10 - no good for dvd authoring
MF5 - Very limited for dvd authoring, wizard/template driven.
Intervideo winDVD creator platinum is better then the 2 programs mentioned above, but not nearly good enough compared to WS2.

Now I want to try the DVD lab one, although at first glance seems complicated to use. Also what to check out the Adobe and Sony offerings.

This is annoying! It would be fine if Ulead could just offer a vista and HD patch.

I read people making complaints about not being able to make 16:9 menus in WS2.
I've tried it and it works great. What's the issue (with regards to that)?

Try making a menu with squares (They will come out oblong)
or circles (The will come out as ovals).

Having said that, read my earlier reply about lateral thinking, with a little thought you can overcome these minor deficiencies.

Here are some reasons why we left dvdws 2 for dmf6+

-VISTA SUPPORT
-16:9 MENU
-AUTOMATIC MENU TRANSACTIONS
-DUAL CORE SUPPORT
-FASTER RENDERING
-BLUE RAY, HD SUPPORT
-ETC.

dmf6+ now supports 1 subtitle wich is enough for us. DVDWS menu creation is UNBEATABLE, however we sacrifice that one for all the rest above, as many users will do.

my 2 cents.

So other than that, does WS2 meet your needs :?: Regarding "HD" DVD's, I would not consider that a "patch" -- that's more of a new product/feature. Right now, Ulead does have MF6Plus that will give you "Basic" HD-DVD Authoring and also the ability to record directly to Blu-ray disc.

How did you make your 16:9 menus in DWS2 :?:

Let me tell you that nice program is still VERY buggy, at least on our systems.

Re: 16:9 menus

About 2 months ago I wanted to test MS2 w/ 16:9. I did not have a 16:9 camcorder then and used a 4:3 video CROPPED tp 16:9 (w/ VS10). That seemed to work fine.

Then for the menus, I clicked on the 16:9 button in WS2 and created widescreen menus. Then I burned it and played it on my 4:3 and everything came out in 16:9 (black bars on top and bottom). Seemed easy enough. Am I missing something? I'm wondering why it';s not working for you guys? Maybe it worked for me beacause I didn't watch it on a 16:9 TV or that my video wasn't native 16:9 when I first shot it?? I dunno?

Re: DVD Lab Pro 2.2

Just downloaded the trial verison and started palying around with it. The interface is very cheesy and the programs seems complicated. I don't really like it either.
