PI vs Photoshop

Post by Gra »

Hi Guys
Up until now I've been using Adobe's Photoshop 7 but I'm thinking of buying PI 12 so I can make DVD menus for my MSP projects and import graphics into Cool3D PS (I assume it can save to WMF and EMF).

Overall I quite like ULead products (although they all have there technical quirks somewhere down the line) but there isn't a comparison chart between PI12 and PS7 and I wonder if any experienced users can give me some pointers on whether PI is as good and user-friendly as the promotional blurb and whether the outputs are the pro quality of PS7.
Thanks & regards.

PI 12 is a user friendly program and uncomplicated unlike Photoshop.
In Photoshop, Paintshop Pro and others one works in layers, with PI 12 we don't......technically speaking, so it makes working with the program a lot simpler.

However, if you read here, you will note there's problems with PI 12... as there have been problems with many of their PhotoImpact versions.

Download the trial version and see how you like it.

If you work mostly with DTP images, Photo Shop (PS) may be better, but if you deal with digital imaging, Photo Impact (PI) is the best.

There are some considerations:
1. Indeed PI has the most advanced user friendly interface but is a different paradigm than PS, something that may require some patience from starters, specially advanced users.
2. Now that PI is not focused to "professionals", it has some annoying behaviors, like the snap to guide feature that has never been accurate, a small annoying thing that may mean a lot if you have to use it.
3. The Corel acquisition, a jeopardy for PI, because even when it is better than Paint Shop Pro and Photo Paint, there may be no commercial reasons to support it anymore. In the past Corel has kill good applications like Picture Publisher.

You cannot create Ulead DVD Menus with Photoshop, for this you need PhotoImpact.

Because you already have Photoshop 7 you may be better off now getting Photoimpact and then you have the best of both worlds.

Each have their strengths and weaknesses, some things you may find easier to do with Photoshop and other things you may find easier to achieve with Photoimpact. You will not be replacing your existing copy of Photoshop you will be supplementing it.

If on the other hand you upgraded to Photoshop CS then you may as well dump your existing copy of Photoshop 7.

I still use Picture Publisher 10 on a regular basis! A big shame that Corel gave it the flick!

Ulead is great. It combines the advantages of illustrator and PS. Layer system is also possible (paint as object mode...) Anyway, the only weak point is that we can't use the PS brushes. If we could do that it would be awesome!

I do not understand why you said there may be no commercial reasons to support PI when you said it's better than Paint Shop Pro and Photo Paint?

As I know PI will still live for a while. Corel does not kill it. Please do not make any false prediction.

First the post you quoted is 2 years old, the world according to Corel has changed since then. Ulead is no longer, as well as its purchaser Intervideo, both gobbled up by Corel. The last we heard was that most of the former Ulead development team is no longer with Corel, including H.T.

Corel has had a long running flagship program, CorelDraw Graphics Suite. Prior to snatching Ulead with PhotoImpact, Corel grabbed Jasc Paintshop Pro. Now with these other graphic programs Corel made a decision to keep all, or discontinue some, and if to discontinue, which? Well PI was one of a long list that Corel put in the disposal, dustbin, trashcan, or whatever you call it. PIX3 seems to be the last version. I have no official word from Corel, however with PIX3 never being released in the UK, and the only development is being done to PSP, I would guess that they have no intentions on releasing any further versions of PI.

No one here works for Corel or has any insider information but the comments by Ron are the general feeling of the Web Board Management Team. We are of course hopeful that we are wrong.

First, thanks for quoting my reply which is 2 years ago. ;)

I have no official comment for the future of PI (or any other Ulead products) because I'm not working for Corel now. You better ask Corel for the question.

Ron and Steve:

Thanks for the words. BTW, many people in the former Ulead development team are still in Corel (I still have connections with them), and they are still working hard to make their products great.

I still love Ulead products. I'm very thankful for the time I work in Ulead, I learned a lot. I just choose to leave with some others to have another career when the merger came. It's normal when a merger came to a company, isn't it?

Regards.
