Hello to all.
I am trying to archive captured video avi files that are on my hard drive.
to dvd's. Most of the files are over 10 gb's.
I read that Movie Factory would span multiple dvdr's and since I am already using VS10 it would be nice to use another Ulead product.
I downloaded trial version of Movie Factory but it limits file size to aprox 4gb's.
Any information on Movie Factory or any other software that can span multiple dvd's without size limitiations would be great.
Thank You

Span multiple disc with files larger than 4gb

I would already capture my DV-AVI's in 2, 3 or 4 GB chunks and back these up to DVD's. You are not relying on a piece of software to "span" them over a number of disks and can control what goes onto each and every one of them.
In the capture module, set the "Split File" property at the desired file size. The clips will be cut precisely and seamlessly with no interruption of the capture process.

Thanks to all of you.
George,
When I add for example a 7908mb file.
Scale on bottom goes over to a little past disc 2.
So far so good, and I am really liking his software.
But when you click on burn here is the warning message you get
The file "C:\Documents and Settings\John Walker\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio\10.0\tape 3\uvs070204-004.AVI" has exceeded the ISO 9660 file system limitation (4GB). It will not be included when burning the disc. Continue?
It seems there is no way around this yet, but I bet as HD DVD evolves we will see new oppurtunitys.
I have thought more about this today I am inclined to agree that I should have done more planing in the capture process and will in futrure.
You people are giving me great advice about the hazards of relying on large file sizes spaning mutiple dvd's.
In the real world I now see that is just asking for trouble.
I did not know that VS10 will capture in chunks.
This is great and solves most of my problems.
But will I be able to work with these chunks as one file or will this chunks be only good for archiving?
I think I can answer my question, I'll just drag them all to timeline
and edit and then save a vsb project file as I am doing now with the
single file.
Is this correct?
I do not want to render the source file but one time when I burn it from vsp. project file..
I am not concerned about future use of vsp project files,I probably would not want to burn the same project files again anyway.
I have read that some people archive back to mini dv and I guess that was someting I was going to try next.
And I tried virtualdub last night which may be useful.
I may eventully do both.
Since these are priceless videos (To me )of my children when they were babys through there teen years I want to take every step I can to preserve the raw footage.
They were recorded on SVHS tape and are from 1988 to present.
But so far they appear to be fine.
Movie Factory seems like powerful software.
How well does it compliment VideoStudio and do some use both?
Thank You all so much.

I am not sure if VS10 in fact is able to capture in chunks of predifined file size, I use MediaStudioPro capture, but I believe so.jwalk2c wrote:...

Yes, in fact I split my captures by scene. Every time I stop the recording in the field, MSP will split the capture. This allows for easy rearrangement of clip order if required.jwalk2c wrote:But will I be able to work with these chunks as one file or will this chunks be only good for archiving?

They do complement each other. I only use MSP8 for the capture and editing, sometimes VS10+ for editing, always DVD MF5+ for authoring and burning to either DVD folders or ISO images on my HDD and either DVD MF5+ or NERO for the burning of the ISO images or DVD folders to DVD-R disks. Often, because I rather err on the better quality side and use max bitrates, I use DVD Shrink to tweak the DVD folder to correctly fit a DVD-R disk.jwalk2c wrote:....Movie Factory seems like powerful software.

The disk format should be UDF not ISO.The file "C:\Documents and Settings\John Walker\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio\10.0\tape 3\uvs070204-004.AVI" has exceeded the ISO 9660 file system limitation (4GB). It will not be included when burning the disc. Continue?
In VS10 you can create a Custom Template for your dv files. When you first create the template it gives you an option for the maximum file size (for splitting). It's a nice feature to use.
