"Repair" install only option?

Post by gordonwd »

Since the last time I used VS10, I had installed Roxio EZ Creator 9 on my PC. That product comes with some movie-editing s/w, but that was not my reason for installing it, and I tried to avoid installing that part of the package. Anyway, when I ran VS10+ yesterday and went to render one of my projects, I got a dialog box saying "MPEG Encoder Unavailable" (or something similar to that). Aaargh!

I figured my only easy option was to do a repair-type reinstallation of VS10, and that did fix the problem and I am rendering MPEG again. But I forgot that doing a repair wipes out all of your library contents and customizations -- libraries, movie templates, etc. -- and I have quite a bit that I'd hate to have to remember and recreate.

Fortunately, I have a good backup program and procedures, so I know where these files are located and will restore them from my latest backup, but I have a couple of questions in case this happens again:

1) Is there something else that I could have done to restore the MPEG encoder that VS was expecting? I have not really looked into how codecs are managed within Windows and by specific products.

2) Is there any way to preserve all that custom content if you have to repair or reinstall VS, or do you have to know the "secrets" of how to find it and back it up yourself?

Hi

Q 2

Your Library files are here:-

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\10.0

VS_Video.dat
VS_Title.dat
VS_Image.dat

Copy these files to a secure location, My Documents should do,

After running a repair or new install, replace the files.

Dvd Menu Templates saved as a custom template are here:-

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio\10.0\Favorites\4x3\Favorites
These should not be affected by a repair, but worthwhile saving any way

Right -- I've been here before :). Another good one to save is MovieTem.dat (I think that's the correct name) that has any custom templates that you've created or modified in Movie Manager.
