Merging Projects in VS8

Post by frank1492 »

I am assuming there is no easy way to do this, if it's possible at all. I have tried "merge", "join", etc. as index keywords to no avail.
As usual, I am most grateful for your help!

Do you mean putting more than one project in the timeline? If so, then choose Insert Media Files Into Timeline. This procedure is for VS10, I don't remember what it was called (if, in fact, it has changed) in VS8

It is NOT possible to import project files (.vsp) into versions 8 or 9 so it is not possible to join projects in those versions.

Version 10 introduced the ability to insert project files so in version 10 you can insert more than one project file and thus join two or more projects - however - inserting project files does not give you full editing capabilities for those projects, the whole project comes in much like a finished mpeg file in that you cannot edit titles/music/video etc independantly.

The best option for joining two projects in v8, v9 and perhaps even v10 (given comments in other threads about inserting more than one .vsp - see here :- http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=20587 ) is to create an .mpg file from each project and insert them into the timeline one after another.

Thanks Brian,
Of course if you create an .mpg from a project to insert into the timeline you can't do any editing of the components of that either, I assume.
I think my best bet is to bite the bulllet and reconstruct the first
project which won't be that bad since the clips used are still on the clip
board.
Perhaps you can explain how I lost part of the project to begin with. I started out doing the end first. (That's the part I lost.) Then I captured a whole bunch of clips, whose time far exceeded the length of the part I
had already done. Somehow when these got transferred to the timeline,
the original clips vanished from the timeline. I would have thought the original clips would have gotten pushed to the end. At first I thought they
must be still there but hidden, but couldn't retrieve them.
Is this typical behavior for VS8?
Thank you again! Frank, Worcester MA, US

Bit difficult to say now without knowing exactly what you did - your procedure sounds OK and it should be quite possible to add clips into an existing project before or after those already there and not lose anything - after all that is what NLE video editing is all about - the ability to add or subtract bits from your video wherever you want.

I can only make a guess now - and my best guess would be that somewhere along the line you didn't save the existing and then new project at the right times.

Thank you Brian. That is entirely possible. I just wanted to make sure that it was me and not some quirk of VS8. I will be more careful the next time. (I've fixed everything now. Took about an hour.)
