VS10 - PAL to NTSC Project - Advice Required

Post by truckontyke »

I wonder if someone can tell me if the following procedure is correct or am I doing something wrong. I do have a few questions as below.

1. I'm importing my PAL mpg into the timeline and save as *.avi using the HUFFYUV compression, keeping the frame type the same as the original mpg (Lower Field First).

2. I then start new project and import the new *avi into the timeline. Make color adjustments as required and add a title for the clip. Then once again save the file using HUFFYUV. This is my first question: Do I save it as Lower Field First or do I save it as Frame Based?

3. I start a new project and import the *.avi into the timeline and save as a new *.avi using DV Video Encoder Type 1. Second question: Lower Field First or Frame Based?

4. I start a new project and go to tools>batch convert and select the DV Video Encoded avi and encode as PAL format. Third question: Lower Field First or Frame Based?

5. Once I have converted the avi to PAL I can then create my MPEG-2 file for DVD.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

The first and most obvious question is: what are your original mpeg properties?

And the second question is: why are you going through so many hoops when you are wanting to output to mpeg in the end.

The simple answer regarding Field Order is: you maintain the original Field Order (lower field first) throughout the project.

But up-converting from mpg to .avi, then to DV, is not going to improve quality. In fact, probably the reverse simply because of the two lots of conversion. Then doing a final down-conversion back to mpeg-2 is the final icing on the cake of quality loss... :?:
