VS10 + crash problems - I might have the reason

Post by jparnold »

I have posted a couple of times in the past regading VS10+ crashing (I never/rarely had a problem with VS9).
I have received many replies and suggestions none of which seemed to have any affect.

I have recently started a new project and while it (project) was small did not experience any crashes. As the project grew in size the crashes started to occur.

I have started to MANUALLY SAVE the project fairly often so that I don't loose too much when the crash occurs (have set the automatic save to every 10 minutes). Since I have been saving manually I have not had a crash. Once or twice the crashing occurred but when I thought about it I am sure that I had not manually saved for some time.

When I experience a crash is usually is when I am doing something which causes disk activity (eg select a new clip, drag the jog slider etc).

Could I have some contention problem with the hard drive - VS competing with the hard drive to save at the same time it is reading?

Do we have any hardware experts who can express an opinion on this?

I'm no hardware expert but I have, for years now without even thinking about it anymore, disabled the auto save function in all my Ulead programs. I prefer to save frequently under alternating names to ensure I have something to return to when I manage to corrupt a file. I haven't had crashes like that for a long time.

Hi

I work the same way as Heinz Oz. Saving my work manually, creating different vsp¡¦s as I work through my project.
From my experience the auto save function does not work very well.

Only when I get carried away with multiple mouse clicks, as though VS hasn¡¦t completed the previous action before being asked to perform another.
And yes the tell tale sign is the hard drive working overtime.
My crashes are far and few between

I do the same thing -- not just in Ulead, but other applications as well. Gives me something to go back to in case a file gets currupted (or in case I just want to go to a previous point in my work).

I also turn off or reduce the auto-save frequency (i.e. instead of every 2 minutes, I make it every 60 minutes, or just turn it off completely in some packages). And I also reduce the number of "undos" kept in history (i.e. instead of 99, I bring it down to about 5 or so...)

jparnold...I am among the walking wounded that also does exactly like you do ! It appears many of us do the same as you do, because of the expected crashes in UVS 10. It is a shame because I like the program UVS10plus a lot.
And we all seem to have observed the same general feeling about what presides the crash. You are not alone...there are hundreds like you...

joosuna...yes it is a pity (that we need to manually save instead of allowing VS to do it automatically).

I am now almost convinced that it is the auto save feature which has caused crashes in the past. At one point soon after purchasing VS10+ I was ready to put it into the rubbish bin but I persevered as I liked the extra features VS10+ has over VS9 (plus I had used hard earned money to pay for it).

Since I set auto save to (every) 30 minutes (just in case I forget to manually save) and manually save often VS10 has not crashed. I have now been using it crash free for many hours - quite a 'record' as far as I am concerned.

I guess that I still manually save as I am still not confident that it won't crash and I don't want to loose 10, 20 or 30 minutes of work.

What a pity I can't reply on autosave and thus free up my mind for more fruitful things.

Can I suggest to everyone that they should either DISABLE AUTO SAVE or set it to say every 30 minutes and then MANUALLY save. It would be interesting to see posts from others who have been plagued by crashes and if this reduces/eliminates crashes.

I just created a very large slide show project in VS10+. I had already disabled auto-save because of this thread. I did about 4 hours of work, forgetting to manually save, and experienced a crash. (Guess I'll never forgot to save again!) So, I guess it's not the auto-save feature. But, I did start manually saving every time I did about ten minutes of work, and didn't have any crashes after that.

One of the other posters to this thread said:

"Only when I get carried away with multiple mouse clicks, as though VS hasn¡¦t completed the previous action before being asked to perform another. And yes the tell tale sign is the hard drive working overtime."

I am certain that this is exactly what happened to me before I crashed-- I was doing audio editing and adjusting pan and zoom at the same time; the hard drive started to go into overdrive (no pun intended) and then I crashed.

:)

I also have learned to save often. Basically after each multitrim operation I make a point of saving, just to be on the safe side. I have the same symptoms, ie multiple clicks seems to catch it out and it goes into overdrive and crashes.
Have not thought of disabling the auto-save, must try that also.

When I first start VS 10+ it usually crashes after about 30 secs.
It does this a few times and eventually settles.
So before do anything a restart a few times and do other stuff until it doesnt crash for a few minutes. And yes I do save all the time!

I suggest that you set autosave to say every 20 or 30 minutes (just in case you forget to manually save) and ALSO to manually save often. It would seem that even though you manually save VS10 'counts' down for the next autosave from the time you did a manual save (or when VS performed an autosave whichever comes first)

Since I did the above I have not had any crashes although I DON'T trust VS10 not to crash and that is why I manually save often.

I have this exact problem and haven't been able to solve it. I even went to all the hassle of creating a new, stripped down hardware profile and stripped down user account to go with it, plus had my virtual memory settings exactly as Ulead recommends in their support section. Same problem -- crash often about 30 seconds after loading a project, then it's stable.

By the way, does anyone know where VS stores the temporary files that it uses for smart-render previews? I have had some luck by going in and changing the project's MPEG settings so that I get the warning message about having to recreate the cached preview, and that usually keeps it from crashing.
