VS8 does not recognize USB device

Post by markojo »

Recently acquired Plextor M402U device to convert VHS tapes to DVD. The device connects to PC via USB port. Plextor's ConvertX SW worked well. System recognized the M402U as (well as an internal TV tuner card).
Was able to capture digital info from M402U, edit, burn DVD, etc.
Had a few minor problems and was advised by Plextor rep to use VS8 SW that was included in package.
Problem: VS recognizes internal TV tuner card, but not M402U. If I plug M402U in after VS is running, system asks if I want to use a new device that was just sensed. When I enter "yes", VS encounters error and shuts down.
Should I be able to use M402U with VS8?
Thanks.

With cards like that, we always advice to use the software provided by the maker of the card for capture. Once captured, you can use any software to edit.

I have no experience with your particular device, but I do have a FusionHDTV usb TV Tuner which also came bundled with VS8 SE DVD. I have never been able to get VS (6, 8, 9, or 10+) to recognize this device.

As Heinz has said, if you are able to capture successfully using other software, then capture using that, then bring the captured files into VS for editing and authoring.

You will find that there are many many people here using a variety of software to achieve their final aims. Personally, I use one program for HDTV captures, VS6 SE for VHS captures, and VS10+ for my miniDV camera. I then use either VS10+ or Vegas for editing, and DVD Architect or DVD Lab Pro for authoring.

The editing and authoring can all be done within VS if you wish, it just comes down to what works best for you, and what kind of budget you expect to work with.

peace.

PS - If you do a search of the forum you will find that there were some chronic audio sync issues in VS8, while these problems are not insurmountable, upgrading to the latest version (10 or 10+) would be advisable, budget permitting of course. Or you could wait for VS11 which many believe will be out within the next 6 months or so.

Thanks heinz-oz and NoM.O,
I was just a bit surprised that the Plextor device wasn't even recognized by VS8. No matter. I'll take your advice and stick with the Plextor SW for capture. It works. I'm a newbie at all this multimedia stuff. Right now I only have a few "Light" or "Express" versions of multimedia SW products. I'll experiment a bit and see what I like, learn a bit (or a lot) and take it from there. My head spins when I see all the competing and overlapping multimedia SW products out there.
Thanks again,
