Imported clips do not retain their original sizes

Post by sburnside »

I'm something of a newbie and was hoping there might be a simple answer for this.

When I am placing clips into a project, they always seem to balloon in size. For instance, one file -which is only 700mb- always explodeds to over 4 gigs. I'm assuming i'm doing something incorrectly as i do not see the product being designed to do this. I'm trying to create a menu driven collection of performance videos I've shot over the last few years but if i can only put one per disk, that's not really a great option.

A friend of mine converted them for me and from what I can discern, they have an .avi extension and XVID formatting [?]. If any further information is needed to assist me, please just post it.

Thanks!

If you use an Xvid or any other of the highly compressed formats like mp4, DivX etc. and want to make a DVD out of them, you can expect the file size to explode because the DVD standard does not allow for such high compression rates. These high compression formats are meant to be for video streaming from the internet but we have also seen DVD players come onto the market which can play some of these flavours, albeit not as DVD.
