DVDWS2 on Windows Vista: serious compatibility issues !

Post by Bungholio »

Hi everybody,
I have just upgraded to Windows Vista yesterday. It seems like DVDWS2 does have some serious compatibility issues with the new OS despite the fact that Ulead states that all products are compatible with Vista. After many frustrating re-installs with various compability settings I finally got it to run in a more or less somehow stable state. However, the imported videos have no sound, neither in the editing nor in the preview mode of DVDWS2. The funny thing is, the final compiled DVD has sound. Are there any Vista users out there who got DVDWS2 running flawless on the new OS ?? As a longtime DVDWS user I got quite familiar with the software over the last couple of years and do not want to go through the hassles of starting from scratch with a new authoring software, neither do I want to buy a new software in case there is any workaround getting it to run on Vista. Any help is truly appreciated !

Where, exactly, did you see a statement from Ulead that all products are Vista compatible?

Especially the older ones will never be fully compatible. these were released a long time before even basic details of Vista were available to the developers.

The newest releases of course will be but the current ones already have or should get patches released shortly.

According to this page:

http://www.explorecommerce.com/members/ ... 1&ID=10245

I was under the impression to get DVDWS2 running under Vista. To quote the first sentence on the page:

"You can install and run a Ulead software for Windows XP on Windows Vista by running the Program Compatibility Wizard. We do not guarantee full stability for Windows Vista though."

I am not complaining about stability issues. I already got DVDWS2 to run in a somehow stable state. However without any sound the software is more or less useless since there is no way to set any precise chapter marks .. :-(

The link you supply has nothing to do with Ulead, AFAIK If it were a Ulead page, the URL would start with www.ulead...

To double-check I went into one of the Ulead sites and did a search for Vista. This page did not come up. I therefore conclude that it is a third party page masquerading as Ulead.

However, what it says is rubbish. I tried, months ago, to get some Ulead products working under Vista. Couldn't. The Compatibility Wizard is just nonsense. It does not work and I tried it with at least 10 applications from several manufacturers. It worked once but was unstable.

Your only hope is to install XP in a dual boot system: this works fine with all my video apps and gets round all the problems with Vista bloatware. (In fact, I've now uninstalled Vista and have gone back to 100% XP use!!!)

I don't think that the page is forged. The page is linked directly from the Ulead site. Just go to ulead.com -> click on "support" -> knowledge base -> enter "vista" into the textbox and you will be transfered to that page. It seems that their whole "knowledge base" is hosted on that site.
However, I do agree that those compatibility statements are complete nonsense. Even Videostudio with the vista-patch applied is now running unstable on my system !
Before upgrading to Vista I checked for compatibility issues on the Ulead site and was relying on their statement that all Ulead software should be useable by running the compatibility wizard. Had I known that this is nonsense, I had probably not upgraded to Vista. It seems like Ulead themselves do not know (or care) which of their programs are Vista compatible. Since I am using DVDWS on a regular basis I might have to go back to XP if I do not get this solved :-( Even after all those years I still have not found any other DVD authoring software which is that easy and intuitive to use.

The link starting

is a valid link, I have previously had emails from tech support that began with that address.

OK, sorry, but I read this as not being Ulead. Are they outsourcing their support, now?

It's a pity you had not searched these forums (and others) for Vista as there are plenty of posts from people having difficulty in getting products to work, even with the so-called compatibility wizard. As I said before, I'd stick with XP for all video work, for the time being.

I hadn't tried WS2 on Vista previously.

I've just installed it and I don't get video or audio from the preview

Graham

Mind you the creative audio drivers for Vista don't work, whereas the XP ones do :?:

Last patch was in 2005. Think there will be a Vista patch for DW2?

Seems to me that Ulead needs to either stop selling WS2, release a patch for it, or stop selling it and instead offer a new product that offers the same functionality but supports current operating systems.

Not really. What percentage of computer users have Vista and what percentage have XP (or one of the others). The website clearly states the system requirements for DVD Workshop 2 - it does NOT include Vista.

Yes they have released a new product - it is MovieFactory 6 / MovieFactory 6+. This one will run on Vista.

Response from Ulead:

"Dear Customer,

I'm sorry but we are still in the process of releasing update patches for our ulead products regarding its Vista compatibility. Please do wait until we have released for WorkShop software as we currently have PI12 and VS10 yet. Thanks and have a great day!"

...So maybe there WILL be a vista patch for WS2 afterall? :)
