Could be a faulty disc.
Create a new folder on your hard drive and copy the entire contents of the disc to it - keeping the same directory structure.
Now try importing it from the hard drive.

Same problem occurs after saving dvd to hdd. The only clips that will import are ones of very short duration. anything past 30 to 40 seconds will cause error as described

Could be a faulty disc, have you tried with another disc to see if you still get this problem?

You might try renaming the VOB files to MPEG, and see if you can insert them. OR VS10 does allow inserting VOB files. Just use, Insert Video and navigate to the VOB files, select them. You may get a prompt asking if you want to pre-process the files, press yes. However I've noticed that this strips away the audio.

You might read this, and see if it may correct your issue..

Thank you

if the dvd's are written in the video mode on the dvd/vcr I find that I can then import them using the import dvd-vr import tool. It may be that the Sony DVR-vr format is not the same as other -vr formats

You are pretty accurate in saying that Sony's is different ;). Most of what Sony does is different, and they call it Proprietary. They like some others adopt the philosophy of "use our products only"...
