MS 8.0 crashing when creating video file

Post by Dolemite »

Greetings from cold Finland Ulead community!

I would like to ask you about a strange problem occuring when rendering video files. I work with HD material, but this problem appears with every type of video files. I open the project, select create video file and select the format. Then mediastudio starts to render file, but it crashes during the first minute of video to be rendered. It does not happen always, but it happens really often, like every second time. When I go render the video I just have to cross my fingers and hope it gets past first 60 seconds. It doesnt happen after that.

The crash also seems to happen during the cuts, like MS does not fopund the next clip. Another strange thing is that it doesnt happen after I have completely reinstalled my system. I have installed windows at least four times during six months and Media studio seems to be operating perfectly. But once again, I installed windows around new year and at the end of january here we go again with the same situation. I dont feel like reinstalling my system every month.

So I have tried pretty much everything and I think it could be some sort of software that causes this problem and I even tought that the problem could be with my motherboard disc controller or something.

What say you?

Can't really answer from your description but your thing about cuts rings a warning bell. Firstly, are you sure there is never a space between the clips? One frame missing can do what you describe. Use Find Empty Time Slots to find them and eliminate them. However, I think it is just as likely that the problem may be associated with the cut occurring remote from an I frame. I suggest that you do a trial whereby the first and last frame of each sequence is an I-frame and see what happens.

Think it may be your graphics card... In your profile, you say you are using the Intel onboard graphics. I have had a problem with a low end system, and what I did was buy a nVidia card, probably spent $80 US on it, and that fixed the problem. Granted, it's a very low end system, the whole PC cost me maybe $400 US new, and, with that card, everything worked fine. (think the card was a PNY)

Even on the low end system, it has 2 gig memory as well, so, that may be an issue as well.

My upper end PC has 2 gig, but, I have dual vid cards, which I have 1 gig vid memory, and it's a quad cpu, (4 processors) and with vid editing, memory makes or breaks it.. (sort of..)

The 945G doesn't give me problems on my 2nd system. Don't think it would be that. However, I've just noticed you use external drives. This can be a fatal cause of crashes. I strongly recommend you do not use these directly for video apps. You can use them for storage but use an internal IDE or SATA drive as a working drive. If IDE, make sure it is master and DMA enabled.

Thank you for your replies. I have also suspected the USB drives for the source of problems. However if I move the necessary files to IDE drives and start the render a video file to the same (Primary IDE HD) drive, it seems to crash even more. I have also used USB drives with my laptop and never had any problems with them.

There are no empty gaps between the clips.

I guess I should get a new graphics card but I doubt that it will have any effect to this problem.

For what it's worth, you might also want to try setting up a Video Editing Profile (a profile with minimal processes running in the background) as outlined in this post.

I have found this to be very helpful and has eliminated many (but not all) problems with crashing, and greatly increases the amount of free RAM available, and speeds up render times.

You're problem might just be a conflict between various background processes...
