ADS Devices 7 VS9

Post by JimV »

I have an XP system p4 with 1.25GB. I just switched to VS 9 from vs6 since vs6 was crashing. I have for years used the ADS USB Instant
DVD external capture box with very good success. Now I understand that since the ADS does codec conversion before it gets to the computer VS9 does not support the ADS.

Besides changing my capture box, is there a driver I can download to make my VS9 work?

If not what external capture box do you recommend to work with VS9?

Thanks

The ADS DVD XPRESS DX2 is a good capture device and comes bundled with a special edition version of VS9. The best way to capture with any external box though is to use the dedicated capture software that comes with it. In the case of an ADS device, this means using Cap Wiz which in my experience is excellent.

Yes you should capture using CapWiz, then simply import the captured files into VS for editing and authoring.

Thank you both Terry and Ken for the reply. I will try CapWiz 1st.

I have this device and while I agree that Cap Wiz is excellent, I have never had a problem capturing from my XPRESS DX2 using the bundled VS9 that came with it also. Unless I'm missing something, either will work great.

Adstech tweaks the version of VS which comes bundled with their devices so that they will capture sucessfully. But standard versions of Video Studio will not capture direct from the device. That is the main context in which we usually recommend that people use CapWiz to capture and then transfer it into VS for editing.

We also tend to recommend the software like CapWiz which is designed precisely to capture with the matching proprietary hardware. Often this gives more flexibility with internal controls that be used to enhace certain properties (such as brightness and contrast etc) on capture.

But if you prefer to use the bundled VS9, then by all means do so. Just bear in mind what I said at the outset, though, if you decided to upgrade to VS10. Then you will certainly have to fall back on CapWiz.

Got it. Good info to keep in mind.

ADS tweaks the copy of VS that comes with it???

Post by mexicorider »

Well, that's pretty stupid on the part of Ulead/Corel to give ADS their software but allow them to tweak it so upgraded copies don't work .........

I mean, isn't the point of bundling your software with hardware to get customers to upgrade later and make money off of them then??

I just fell into the same trap: upgraded to VS 11Plus, but when I found out it doesn't work with my ADS DVD Xpress DX2, I just got my money back from Ulead.

They (ADS) should at least tell you that the VS they're giving you is a tweaked version and that normal versions will not function with their product.

I'm going back to Nero. This is disgusting.

For what it is worth, the Ulead/Adstech arrangement is a fact of commercial life. Ulead wants to sell programs, but has little control over what other companies might do with it. In many ways, the boot really is on Adstech's foot, because it refuses to share the secrets of its proprietary hardware chip used in its devices with software companies so that the latter can develop all editions of their software to work with the hardware. to Adstech, the hardware is more important than the software...
