Is it possible to set starting filename for captured files?
VS allocates files names to every file created during video capture (and stills and audio).
I seem to think that VS might reuse filenames.
Is it possible to set the NEXT filename to be allocated OR what happens during video capture when using 'detect by scene'?
I have multiple tapes of an trip which I need to capture and really need ALL clips to have consecutive filenames.
If this is not possible I guess the next best thing to do is to capture to a different folder and different (video) library but I prefer to keep them altogether.
Lastly is it possible to capture video (from camera) to an existing project and all the newly captures video be automatically added to the end of the existing project?
Thanks

As far as I know it is NOT possible to preset file names in VideoStudio.
VideoStudio does not duplicate filenames - every clip captured has a unique file name consisting of "uvs" followed by the date in (non USA format) reverse order - then a sequential number - so if I started capturing a bunch of clips now they would be labelled "uvs070209-001, uvs070209-002, uvs070209-003 etc. etc."
I usually just allow the default capture and then rename the files to a more meaningful name as soon as I stop capturing.
The capture can be to any open video library and it then takes seconds to drag the clips down into the timeline - so I see no point in trying to capture to any specific point in the timeline of any specific project.

Thanks Brian,
I guess then that if the date is used as part of the filename then I should have no problems so long as I only capture one tape each day. One per day should give me more than enough to do (edit).
Regarding your last sentence - it really does matter that I be able to use an existing project and have the captured scenes automatically added to the timeline as I have approximately 3 hours of "raw" (unedited) video to capture and hundreds of individual clips. THe final video will probably be less than 1 hour in duration as I will not include all clips and the ones I retain will be reduced in length (I always 'shoot' each clip longer than I want just in case).
So to drag each of the required (captured) clips onto the timeline would take longer than to have them automatically placed into a project.
Maybe I should just try it and see.

Since the filename is UVSyymmdd-nnn you only have a problem with the 1000th capture of the day...jparnold wrote:Thanks Brian,

This my understanding of it.

You can place all of these clips in your timeline in one movement. Click on the first clip in the Library and then do a Shift-Click on the last clip. This should highlight all 100+ clips. Then just drag the whole lot to the specific point in your timeline, and viola, they are all loaded in your timeline in the exact order as they appeared in your Library, with the default transition placed in between each clip. Pretty niffty. So to drag each of the required (captured) clips onto the timeline would take longer than to have them automatically placed into a project.

Thanks everyone.
Bryan's suggestion seems to be the best for me (select first and last clip using Shift click.
Daniel
Regarding the suggestion of only having problems with the 1000th clip - it seems to me that if you exit the VS application and restart at a later time then the file number will be reset to UVSyymmdd-001 causing a potential problem. Am I correct? This of course can be overcome if you capture to a differnt folder I guess.
Thanks again everyone
While I am "on a roll"
Some clips I have are fairly long (up to 40 seconds) whereas most are less than 10 seconds. When I select one of the long clips in the timeline VS automatically places the "cursor" at the BEGINNING of the clip and if I want the END of the clip (and the end of the clip is not displayed on the screen as it is long) I have to drag across the clip to reach the end.
Is there a method of selecting a clip and have the "cursor" placed either where in the clip I clicked on or at the end of the clip? I realise that I can set preferences to display clips shorter but then my short clips are extremely short in the timeline.

To move to the end of the clip click the End button under the preview window. The button looks kind of like this (>|)

I'm at work here, so no capture device is available, but IIRC VS will not overwrite a file, it will give the next number for the first clip captured.jparnold wrote:Daniel

Very easy to test though so please be my guest and report for the rest of us. Start a capture, stop, shutdown, restart VS capture again and see if you have 002.
What I know is when my Pana is not immediately recorgnized in capture step, and I try again, then finally cycle power, the first clip is 003. So even unstarted capture sessions are counted.
This my understanding of it.

Daniel,
I really didn't think that VS would overwrite existing files.
My concern is that I may end up with clips out of order.
For example
1) Capture vide - files assigned UVS070206_001 - UVS070206_100
2) delete some clips not required say UVS070206_009
3) shut down VS
4) later on the same day - start VS and capture some more from the same tape (or a different tape but taken on the same vacation). VS may assign the first clip file name UVS070206_009 (the clip previously deleted) and therefore my captured clips are now out of order.
YES I know this is hypothetical BUT my initial question was "Is it possible to set the NEXT filename to be allocated " - and the answer is "no". And I know there are ways around this like capturing to a different folder and library.
