Hello, I'm also new here as I've just purchased Movie Make 5 plus a few weeks ago. My first project was to take avi's that I created in windows movie maker and made a dvd using movie maker 5. It all worked great. I then explored movie maker 5 plus and seen all the wonderful things I could do (except for text)... I love the transitions and other options avalable! Anyway... I have yet been succesful at anything with movie maker 5 plus since the first dvd I did using unaltered avi's from another program. When I export a edited clip the program freezes! when I hit ctrl-alt-del and get to the task manager, it says that the program is waiting for input from me? I frustation, I made all the clips and skipped exporting them and went right to BURN DVD... 2 hours later it said (FAILED TO BURN DVD).... Can anyone guide me in the right direction with this program. I really like it and it's driving me crazy! I'm sure my system's got enough of everything as it's a intel duo 2 gig chip, 2 gig memory, intel motherboard, etc
Thanks beforehand
Ron
Movie Maker 5 Plus help
You've probably got one or more bad/corrupted video files. Often, a corrupt file will play back OK, but cause trouble when you try to re-code it or make a DVD from it.
AVI does not tell the whole story. AVI is a "wrapper" or "container" format, and it can contain anything from DV to DivX. AVI/DV (13GB per hour from a MiniDV camcorder) rarely causes trouble. The more compressed formats cause the most trouble.
It is possible that your files are getting corrupted during the editing process (i.e. when you add transitions with Movie Factory).
I've sometimes had similar problems with MPEGs. The DVDs I made from unedited files were OK. But, when I edited the files, I had crashing when trying to make the DVD, or I ended-up with a DVD that had "lip sync" problems. (My solution was to buy a special-purpose MPEG editor.) This didn't happen with every MPEG file, and some people never experience it with any file format. Like I said, the more compressed formats seem to cause the most trouble, and DivX/Xvid users seem to have more trouble than the rest of us.

You may need to use Windows Movie Maker for editing, or find an editor that's specifically designed for your particular AVI format. My first project was to take avi's that I created in windows movie maker and made a dvd using movie maker 5. Thank you for the information and quick reply. I can understand the problems with other avi's etc...
What I'm doing is making a slideshow of pictures that we took on a recent trip. Each place we visited is another movie. I've added music and transitions and effects as I said before in Wndows Movie Maker and turned them into AVI's. These were the first project and it all went well. I then tried editing the avi's in Movie Factory 5 Plus. That didn't work. So I redone everything in Movie Maker 5 Plus... I created the entire slideshow using Movie Maker 5 plus only using the Pan and Zoom function. I then edited that slideshow to add the transitions and music... it's that one that will not save when exporting. It gets to 26%, 45% or 99% and freezes up the computer. When I hit ctrl alt del, the task manager says that the program is waiting for input from me. However, the program has not asked me anything or provide a input field for me to respond to. I have tried the "Fresh Install" and it still does it. I've tried making a smaller file (25 pictures) and it still does it. So I don't know.
Anyway, thanks again for the input... it's appreciated that someone responded.
