How to clip leading/trailing ends of file without rendering?

Post by djcarpenter@comcast.net »

I just want to remove the first few minutes of a WMV file without having to render the file. Didn't see how to in the manual. Possible?

You don't say what version you are using, but if it's VS10 then page 62 of the manual explains it in detail. (Link to the manual is below.)

But I don't want to render....

Using VS10. I've tried what I think you suggest: "Clip: Save Trimmed Video" but that seems to render the file, right? Perhaps I'm naive but I just want to clip of part without rendering the file. What am I missing?

Check the box that says Perform Smart Render. You will get a new (modified) copy of the file, but the WMV won't be decoded and re-coded except where required by the particular edit. ...Assuming Smart Render works correctly with your particular WMA file... :?

This is how nonlinear video editing works. Your original files are never touched. The result is always a new file with a different filename, and/or in a different folder.

Cut off part of file

Thanks for all you offerred. But, I still can't stop it from rendering the whole file: "Clips: Save..." doesn't let you chose settings and "Create Video File" always renders. Obviously can't be done.

I am new to this but why can't you Share / Create Video File and then save as a high quality MPEG and use that for working with?

As far as SmartRender I thought this was saving the cut file without "really" rendering. It says Rendering but is that not really just saving without loss?

I could do that but it would still go thru the whole file, pixel by pixel, frame by frame, "rendering. Why do all that processing and modify all those frames? Thx

It creates a separate video clip on your hard drive, but I believe it is not re-encoding your video (as if "Smart Render" is in effect).

I agree with George. I use Save Trimmed Video all the time, preferring to get a real file instead of the virtual one you get if you make your cuts, delete, but don't use Save Trimmed Video.

You can tell by the (relative) speed of the Save that it is not re-encoding. In effect it will only process the cut, but leave the rest alone. I have certainly never noticed any quality loss.
