Multiple file playback error????

Post by kaybee »

Problem is:
I have 2 distinct .avi files, say first.avi and second.avi
Each is stored separately in its own library.
I have placed say 3 clips from first.avi onto the timeline followed by 3 clips from second .avi on to the timeline.
Now
When I playback the 'project' the first 3 clips of first.avi play OK but then palyback stops with the following error message

"Multiple file playback error. Cannot play. Make sure DirectShow and your sound card are installed correctly"

FIRST QUESTION. Am I trying to something that cannot be done?
SECOND QUESTION. What/where is DirectShow. Part of Directx?
I have winXP home Sp2 installed. Stacks of RAM and Gbytes of storage.

Sound is on MoBo (SoundMax digital integrated audio)
Please guide me

Hi from one KB to another!

Can you tell us the properties of the two distinct AVI files, please, and particularly the second one? Within VS, right click on the file, copy down its properties and post them here.

As you may know, .avi is merely a carrier extension, and various other formats use it. True uncompressed .avi is huge (65GB per hour of video); DV/AVI is more compressed but is used to transfer video from a mini DV camera to the computer with no loss in quality. But then there are the really highly compressed formats like DivX and XVid which also use the .avi extension. These in particular can cause problems, and to start with you have to have the relevant codec on your computer for them to be able to play.

I suspect you might have one of these more difficult formats in the second video and your machine is having difficulty throwing it together with another format, and not being able to play it all on the fly...

DirectShow is the DV codec used by VS.

Hi KB
yes there seems to be what may be a crucial difference in the 2 vieo formats as follows:
First.avi has DV Video Encoder -type2. Audio compression PCM
second.avi has DV Video Encoder -type1. Audio compression DV Audio Pal

If, as may be likely this is the problem then is it possible to convert the second.avi to type2 and its audio compresin to PCM and would this solve the problem?
