File size in burning step

Post by Nicholas Rumin »

The burn step displays two entries in red labelled "required/available disc space". The firs enty for my project is 4.74 Gbytes and the second enty (in brackets) is 5.99 Gbytes. The availabe hard disc space is also 4.74. Not sure what those entries in red mean. The run time for the vsp file shows 1 h 13 m so I should still have plenty of unused space on the dvd disc

Disc usually refers to a CD, DVD (or floppy). Disk usually refers to a hard drive.

The file size depends on only two factors. The combined audio & video bitrate, and the playing time. It is possible to create a 1:13 MPEG file that won't fit on a DVD, especially if you use LPCM audio (uncompressed).

Here's a link to a Bitrate Calculator.

What kind of DVD are you using: single layer, or double?

If (as I suspect) it is single layer, then if it says that the required space is 4.74 GB, that is too big for the DVD if it is in red. Normally, you can only fit 4.3 GB on a single layer disc.

Have you done your whole project on a small hard disk? What is the size of the hard disk your Video Studio working folder is on (normally in My Documents\Ulead Video Studio\10.0) and when you right click on that drive in My Computer and look at Properties, how much space is still available?

As Doug has already said, if you have a project which is using a bit rate of 8000 kbps and LPCM audio, then if it is 1 hour and 13 minutes, it will be slightly too large for a single layer DVD -- and that is what the program is trying to telling you.

Burning a dvd disc

Post by Nicholas Rumin »

Sorry but I do not understand. I am trying to burn an MPEG file that was created from the ouptut of a camcorder (I converted the dvi to MPEG2).
At the bottom of the burn page where the disc capacity is shown (4.7GB) next to it on a green background I see 4.74(5.08) GB 1 h 13 m. On the rhs, on a red background, 4.38(4.70) GB is shown. I am not sure what these numbers mean and whether the project will fit on the dvd.

I must say that I find the help manual that comes with the ULEAD software very hard to follow.

On another subject, after selecting the templates, when I preview I do not see the thumbnails for the chapters.

I did not notice Ken Berry's reply. I am working on the computer's C drive which is 256 GB and has about 160 GB free.
I accepted the default settings when I captured video from my camcorder. Would that have been LPCM for the audio?
Thanks for your patience. Your tutorial on the procedure for creating a project using ULEAD is the best help I have found so far.

Hi
I am trying to burn an MPEG file that was created from the ouptut of a camcorder (I converted the dvi to MPEG2).
The default setting for mpeg audio is Ntsc as far as I know. And 8000 kbps for the bit rate.

Converting the Mpeg again using Digital Dolby is the easiest option.
But the file may still be oversized, you are right on the limit.
Converting should be quick as you will be only changing the audio.

Start a new project (important)
Insert the mpeg file.
File-Project Properties-edit¡Xcompression tab--change only the audio to Digital Dolby

Share Create Video File ¡VSame as Project Properties

The new Mpeg should be smaller, and hopefully fit to disc.

If not then the Bit Rate will have to be reduced.

Reducing burn file size by converting audio to Dolby

Post by Nicholas Rumin »

Thank you Trevor. By converting the audio in my MPEG file to Dolby, the file size went from 4.8 GB to 4.1. By the way the conversion time was no shorter.
I am still puzzled why I used to be able to fit 2 hours of video on a 4.7 GB disc also using Dolby and not even converting the dvi file to MPEG (using My DVD :( ) whereas here I have a 1h 30 min file requiring 4.1 GB.

Its all down to compression. The more you compress a file the more you get onto a disc, but also the lower the quality.

Hi Nicholas

I assume you were sucessful in creating a dvd.

I would have thought that the render/conversion would have been quick.

Can you compare the properties of the first Mpeg file and last rendered Mpeg video file.

The only difference should be the 'Audio' properties, changed to DD.

I have a new problem :) . I started a new project, imported the new MPG file with the Dolby audio. However, when I go to the last burn page the "required/available" data does not appear for either the hard disk or the dvd disk. When I go to "burn options" , "test before burning" and "buffer underrun protection" are faded out. If I try to burn, I get the message that the project may not fit on the disc :( .

Hi

After creating a new mpeg file.

Start a new project
Share-Create Disc
Add Video

Browse your hard drive and add the new created Mpeg containing Digital Dolby.

Is the file still to large.

I see what I did wrong. I used file>import video >share>create disc in stead of going directly to share>create disc and then importing the media. Not clear to me why the first does not work but at least the problem is solved and I understand the "procedure".
Yes, with Dolby sound the file is large enough.
Many thanks.

I sat down for a last review of the project before burning and noticed that the audio is distorted. The best way to describe it is the sound is modulated with a low frequency signal so the sounds sounds clipped. It is particularly noticeable on music of course.
Just to recall, I converted a dvi project to MPEG and then re-rendered it to convert the audio to DOLBY.
Thanks

I have had problems with Dolby. When I use LPCM I get perfect sound. Others on this board report no problems with Dolby. :?
