In VS, under Preferences > General Tab, is your Playback Method set for Instant Playback? If so, is the Instant Playback Target set for Preview Window?

I would recommend using the ADSTech Capture software called Capwiz to capture the video (also check the ADStech.com support pages to see if there are updated drivers and software for your device).

After making your captures, you can then use the captured videos in your VideoStudio project...

I would go one step stronger than George, and say that you have no choice BUT to use the CapWiz program with the DX2. That's what it is there for.

Adstech is one of several companies which keeps its hardware/software linkage proprietary. At one stage, they used to tweak a particular version of Video Studio to work with the device. They may still do so. But none of their devices work with commercial versions of VS for capturing and the the version of VS the DX2 comes with is both an SE cut-down version and one or two versions out of date into the bargain.

So you capture (using the DVD/mpeg-2 setting) with CapWiz. Then import into VS for editing and authoring.

I'm reluctant to say the highlighted section in blue is ALWAYS the case -- I remember when VideoStudio 9 was released, the full retail version automatically recognized the ADSTech Instant DVD 2.0 device (the device came with VS8, and the full VS9 came out-of-the-box able to capture from the unit). So, at least in the past, there were VideoStudio Full versions that automatically recognized an ADSTech capture device

I have the latest drivers and it is Cap Wiz that I'm trying to get to work. When using capwiz I hit the preview button and the screen changes from Grey to Black but thats it.
Driving me insane now :?

What are you seeing when the camcorder/VCR is playing before you try to start the capture? Is the screen grey at that point? Try stop... start on the playback device and see if the picture arrives. It feels like the DX2 doesn't like the incoming syncs.

These aren't commercial copy protected tapes, are they? I'm not sure it that's the symptom you'd get. It would depend on the hardware & driver... You might get a warning message, no, picture, a scrambled picture, or even a perfect picture if the hardware manufacturer isn't "playing along" in the copy protection game.

Is the device properly recognized by your computer?

Some things to check:

-make sure video-out from source to video-in on device
-make sure to select proper source in CapWiz (RCA or S-Vid, etc...)
-make sure to select the proper format (NTSC or PAL)

George

Have you tried a camcorder with the DX2? Can it see the output of that device? If it fails to see the camcorder then there is a failure within the DX2 itself. If it does see the camcorder then the problem is with the VCR. Are you totally sure that the correct video output from the VCR is selected?
