Exporting 16:9 to .wmv WideScreen

I am new to this so please be patient

What I need to know is how can I export video that was recorded in wide screen mode 16:9 aspect ratio to fit the screen with no horizontal bars across the top and bottom? What it looks like is going on is it is exporting the file 4:3 and inserting horizontal bars across the top and bottom. Was trying some software called PowerDirector 5.0 and I could export wide screen Video to a file that took up the entire screen in Windows Media Player 11. Is there a way of doing this?

I just looked into it more. When I go to import my file from a Mini DVD is converts the file to a 4:3 mpg file. When I open up that mpg in Windows Media it is defiantly not 16:9.

I love the program but need it to be true Wide screen with no bars at the top and bottom.
