Question about WMV-HD Output and current workstation

Post by jwillb »

Hello all,

I built a short "test" slideshow in VS10+ and then created video files in a number of different formats, etc. When I output a 1280 X 720 WMV-HD file, it would playback in WMP11 on my workstation (see profile) beautifully. However, a 1440 X 1080 WMV-HD would not play - very choppy, hesitating - as if my workstation was choking on it.

Question - Should my current rig be able to play these files? If I want to go further than this (like 1080p to eventually go on my new LCD TV) will I have to upgrade my computer? Or, would additional Video memory help for the time being? :?:

I think the problem is more with WMP11. I think WinDVD is suppose to play HD videos.

For your system you may be able to work with HD video, using the Proxy. That is what it is for. However it is recommended to have something a bit more powerful. System Requirements for VS10+

For editing/playing WMV HD files you would need not only better CPU but also better video card.

Check this thread for HD support in video cards:

Hope this helps.

Try Windows Media Classic - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Med ... lassic.htm. I find that it is able to play high def. files better than any other, right now.

Thanks to all for your replies! I was starting to get all hot n' bothered about buying a new workstation :P thinking that mine was totally inadequate, but I think I'll wait a little and see if the prices on the Core 2 Duo's come down in the next six months. So far, other than BD or HD-DVD players (too much $$$) or HTPCs, I can't find a reasonable solution for piping 1080p files to my HDTV anyway.

I'll just keep learning and working in SD and maybe some 720p!

Don't give up yet. Your system is just a shade slower than mine (2.8 vs 3.0 GHz.) and I can play HD video all day.
