I have a Plextor PX-AV100U digital video converter that I've been using to capture all my video. I've never had problems capturing before, including last month, when I last used it to capture video. A few days ago, I tried to capture some video, and I got a message that said it failed to recognize a capture device and that there was no capture driver in the system. I have DVDMF 5 and DVDMF 5+. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my PX-AV100U a few times, unistalled and reinstalled MF 5, installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled MF 5+, and still no go. I haven't made any changes to my system (Win XP, SP 2), and the only things I've done to MF are add some menus that I made in PhotoImpact. My PX-AV100U is recognized by my OS (which says everything is working fine). I have all the updated drivers and I called Plextor's tech support. They had me reinstall my Intervideo WinDVD 2 that came with the device, and now I can capture again with it. However, that program is limited in that it can only capture 2 hrs of video and it cannot capture in 16 X 9 (that's the main reason I prefer MF). With MF, I've tried capturing with my VCR already on and with it off. I'm at wits end! I just want to be able to capture with MF again. Please help me figure out what's wrong! Thanks.

Okay, I uninstalled both my capture device and MF5+ and then reinstalled both. Now MF recognizes my driver and I can capture again (funny, because I tried this many times and it didn't work). However, I have a new problem. When I try to capture my VHS, I capture anywhere from 10-50 seconds, and then it tells me that the video is copy protected. How is that? That never happened to me before. Besides, how can a video that I recorded off TV be copy protected? I've also captured store bought VHS movies and I never had this happen. Someone, please help! I'm really getting fed up with this program lately!

I think I know why MF keeps telling me that my VHS tapes are copy protected. If the little tab on the VHS (the one that you break off so you don't accidentally tape over whatever you taped) is broken off, I get that error message. I tried putting tape over that little tab, but I still get the error message. I can only come up with two solutions:
1. Copy my tapes to other tapes (which would worsen the video quality and cause me to buy a lot of blank tapes) and then capture from the copies.
2. Capture using other capture software (which is unfortunate because I have found that MF captures with the best quality).
Does anyone have a solution where I can capture from my original tapes using MF? If not, are there any free programs out there that can capture in high quality?

I think you are trying to run a petrol engine with diesel. Commonly, with analog capture devices, the software that comes with the device is the only one to work fault free. It has been tweaked to work with that device.
I doubt that your device came bundled with MF 5 or MF5+.
If your device cannot handle 16:9 how do you expect a different program to do that?

At this point, I don't even care about capturing in 16X9. I can just convert it to 16X9 in MF. My problem now is that I can't capture from my VHS tapes. MF inexplicably started going haywire on me. I didn't make any changes to my system or to MF (I have 5 installed now because at least it recognizes my driver, which 5+ doesn't for some reason). I had no problems with the first four or five captures that I had. Now I keep getting the error saying that my tapes are copy protected. First of all, how can the program even recognize copy protection from an analog tape? And second, I'm trying to capture stuff that I recorded off of TV. Whether or not the little tab is broken off on the tape shouldn't even matter. I'm sure I'm not the only person that's had this problem. I'd just like some help from someone who may have encountered the same problem before. Besides, if MF is compatable with my capture device (which it is), I should be able to capture with no problems. If a certain capture device doesn't completely work with MF, then Ulead should take it off the compatability list or fix the bug. People shouldn't have to waste their hard earned money on a program that doesn't do what it's supposed to do.
