which video capture card to use

Post by mikepod »

Sorry if this is a repeat topic.

I want to capture all my Hi8 analog videos into the PC via the S-video cable. I was looking at the Turtle Beach TBS-1500-01 PCI card. I did not see it on the supported list for MovieFactory.

Can anyone recommend a decent card for what I want to accomplish?

I eventually want to put it onto DVD. What format should I capture, MPEG2, MPEG4, AVI?

Thanks,
Mike

Compatibility isn't all that important, since your capture card should come with capture software. I always recommend capturing with the software that's made especially for your capture device. Anything else is "hit or miss".

I recommend a card that can capture to AVI/DV. DV is the 13GB per hour format that you get from a MiniDV camcorder. Movie Factory will convert it to MPEG-2 before you burn the DVD. (AVI is a "container" or "wrapper" format, and it can contain anything from DV to DivX.)

In general, the more compressed the format, the more trouble it causes.

DVDs are MPEG-2, and I made the mistake of buying a Hauppauge MPEG-only capture card. Some of us have had trouble when trying to edit MPEGs. (See my tag-line below for a hint! )
