Conversion to DVD creates choppy results

Post by seppfett »

Dear All,
As a new user of this forum I certainly checked if I could find something about my problem - I did, but I thought it might still make sense to describe the issue for other new users. And, probably someone has a short clear fix for me and others.

The issue: Since I switched from VS9 SE to VS10 pro the results of the DVDs I created are not smooth, which means that dependent on the scene the video plays choppy: fast scenes: more choppy, slow scenes: smooth. This never happened in VS9 SE. The basic video material I use are MPEG files generated by an ADS DVD Express DX2 box or by a Technisat SkyStar2 card.

I also noticed that under VS9 SE very often the original MPEG file was not rendered again if it was fine in length. Under VS10 pro it always does, and, yes, I checked the box that it should not render when the file fits.

I have tried to change the frame adjustments according to the original file , e.g. upper half, with no improvement. I may not use the right words here as I work with a German version of VS10 pro - but I hope you understand.

Yes, I worked with files that are ok and created excellent results under VS9 SE.

Thanks for your help :D

Make sure the formats are the same. So if you have PAL source, make sure your project is creating a PAL DVD.

can you list the properties of your source mpeg, and also your project settings?

Regards,
George

The trick is to make sure you keep the same properties throughout your project if you can.

First, go to File > Preferences > General, and tick the box which says 'Show message when insert first video in timeline'. That way, the next time you open a new project, and drag one of your captured video clips into the timeline, a message box will appear, asking if you want the project properties to match the video clip's properties. Say 'OK'...

That way, if your video clip is an mpeg-2 which uses a frame rate of 6000 kbps, is Upper Field First, and uses mpeg layer 2 audio, your project will have exactly the same properties.

One thing you must NOT do is mix video which is Upper Field First, with video which is Lower Field First in the same project. And you absolutely must not change the Field Order of the original video. If your captured video is Upper Field First, then you must use UFF throughout the project. If you change it to Lower Field First, or mix the two, then you will get the sort of jagged video you describe, particularly during panning or fast motion.

When you have done your editing, and you want to produce a new video file of the whole edited project, click on Share > Create Video File > Custom. If you check in the properties box at the bottom of the new dialogue box which appears, the properties for the new video should match the project properties. You can change any of them by clicking on the 'Options' button. But I generally leave mine alone in this situation.

Give the new file a name and click the 'Save' button. I usually use SmartRender in this situation as well. If so, then the new video file will be produced relatively quickly. If you have any problems with the final video file, like out of sync video and audio, then do it again but with SmartRender switched off.

Then close your project, and with an empty timeline, go to Share > Create Disc. Insert your new mpeg-2 in the burning timeline, create your menu and burn to DVD.

Thank you for your help. So far I have not succeded. I did not do the step of saving the file after having edited it. I went straight from editing to share and create disk. Can this be the issue? I think I have done the rest the way you explained it Ken.

I am a bit lost as I never had this issue with version 9 SE. So, I'll try tonight smart rendering to a file and then making the DVD from a new project as you describe.

I'll let you know about the result.
