ADS DVD Express DX2

Post by mcfallison »

I am considering the purchase of the ADS DVD Express DX2 for transferring DV and analog to DVD. I have some older analog tapes in a library to convert. I presently have VS9.

My question is this- I tape lectures where I might tape for a full tape's length, up to one and a half hours, of someone speaking. Then I need to transfer it to DVD for archiving and later viewing. Can anyone out there who has used the DVD Express tell me if I can get good lip sync for a 1.5 hour shot using either VS9SE or CapWiz?

Thanks for your help.

I don't have the device, but I understood Adstech actually guarantees that their captures retain lip sync.

And you must use CapWiz, not VS for the captures. Then insert the captured files and edit in VS.

Please forgive me for doubting the word of ADS but I am a former Pinnacle user. And since this is an unusual situation (a 1.5 hour shot), I am hoping to get confirmation of lip-sync from someone who has the device.

Am I being too cynical?

Ken Berry-
Looking back over my reply I think it may come across as rude. I did not intend it to be. Sorry.

Are you saying that ADS is guaranteeing it as in "your money back?"

You didn't come across as rude at all!

And no -- no satisfaction guaranteed. If you look at the Adstech site, all it says is
Exclusive "Audio-Lock" technology for perfect lip synch
I take your point about wanting first hand testimony too. It's just that the only complaints we ever receive here about the DX2 is from people who try to use another program (like VS) to capture with it. That is why I specifically mentioned that you should use CapWiz to capture. Then edit in VS.

Not one complaint about lip sync in those captures...

I have the DX2, and with other variables taken into account such as disabling memory hogging programs during capture, the DX2 will retain sync on long duration captures. The longest duration I captured in one hit was 55 minutes and the sync was fine.

Thanks TDK,

Do you have to re-encode the mpg when making a dvd?

I capture using the NTSC MPEG2 DVD setting in cap wiz. I then use the 'same as project properties' setting for any rendering within video studio. I make sure that 'use non square pixel rendering' is only used for the final render otherwise your MPEG pictures will soften slightly with each render, and I always disable the 'smart render' function to keep the audio in sync.

finally, I created a DVD burn template which exactly replicates the settings present in 'same as project properties'. The end result is excellent quality NTSC DVD pics with either LPCM or Dolby audio.

Happy burning!
