I am trying to make a video file of a number of mp4 and some jpg images
when the render is nearly done I get the message 'frame 8678 is unreadable'
Can you please help me with this one

I think the error is fairly clear. That particular, specific frame can not be read, so the rendering is coming to a halt. The program has no idea what to do with it.
To track down that frame, first determine the frame rate (fps). If your video file is PAL, it should be 25 fps. So for every second of video there are 25 frames. So given this is frame 8678, divide that by the rate 25, which gives us 347.12 or just 347 seconds, which equates to about 5.78 minutes into the video. I would go to that place and cut out about 1 second. Or start looking at 25 frames either side of that mark for a frame that may be corrupt. It could be that a transition, effect or filter has been applied there. If so try removing it and see if you still get the same error.
