AVI Issue - no sound after cutting off a few seconds?

Post by somegeek »

When I add an avi and then cut off the first few seconds - sound is gone. Do I need to convert this to another format so this doesn't break?

So what flavor of avi :?: AVI is a carrier or container for many video formats or codecs. DivX, Xvid, MOV and DV all use the AVI carrier, so will have that as the extension (movie.avi).

To determine the actual video format, right-click on a video clip in either the library or on the timeline, select properties and post them back here please..:)

Thanks for posting that...:)

MJPEG codec, you used a digital still camera for the videos? This has been a problem. VS did issue a patch for VS 8, however users have been successful in applying it to VS9 and now 10. The link to this patch is no longer on Ulead's website, but can be obtained in our Product/Tutorials Section under the Frequently Asked Questions... or just click on the link to take you straight to it..

Might have been a $30 cheapo, but about the only difference I see between it and my $400 (Kodak) cheapo, is the Resolution. Mine records 640 x480, but still uses the MJPEG codec. Kokdak's Easyshare program installed the MJPEG codec on my machine, and in doing so, I have had no problems with using them. However it records to MOV file format, but should still be the same.

The above patch is geared toward the Kodak MOV format. So I don't know if it will cure your problem or not.

You might try going to Kodak's website, and downloading their software which is free. Then the only part of the software you want to try and install is the Camera Connection. The rest is bulky and will pull your PC to a crawl..

I did try using Windows Media Encoder to create a .wmv and that edited fine in VS. After cutting out some footage I still had my sound.

I'll give that patch a whirl.

Thanks for the reply, Ron.

I installed the new file and no luck. Audio still dies after I remove any clip of video.

What does this do? Currently I am just pulling an .avi file off my camera as a transfer from the flash drive.

Looking for a little more assistance here... what would I set the custom file output to to keep this video format intact upon rendering(minus frames with title effects that is)?

The original file size is 61MB which is fine by me. Figure the MP3 I am adding and titles should only add about 5MB of data? Would like VS to perform a smart render and not alter those frames that only have new audio... when I select to create a file -> 'Same as first Video Clip' I get a 2gig file.

Appreciate any input.

Do you have the MJPEG codec installed on your system? What are your intentions for the video, post it on the internet, email, or DVD? I hope it's not DVD as ½ D1 resolution is 352 x 480 (NTSC) or 352 x 576 (PAL). So it would not be DVD compliant, thus be recoded.

As far as file size, I know what you mean. As a test I grabbed one of my short MOV clips and created a video file with about everything the same as the video clip. The original video clip was 57 meg, the clip I rendered was 335 meg. I created a MOV file, using the MJPEG codec and identical audio, so I guess VS does not compress the MOV file format well. Even with my settings VS did not Smart-Render.

I don't know what the mjpeg codec would be. Intentions are to upload it to YouTube. YouTube recommends MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 320x240 resolution with MP3 audio. I was going to try to upload in the .AVI format to keep the original video in tact as much as possible but my rendering woes are not helping.

I did go to divx.com an downloaded the trial version and rendered it with that after adding titles and such in VS before uploading and the file size was 59MB, after adding titles and MP3 audo the rendered DIVX file is 79MB.

I was hoping to create an .AVI file from the original .AVI file that had minimal rendered frames before uploading so YouTube's conversion process was the only conversion this file went through(with exception of the frames that had titles added to them requiring rendering).

Dang - glad to know I'm not alone on this.

When I render the .AVI in VS to .WMV the output file appears a little darker in color. Is this a .WMV inflicted artifact?
