video hosting site
Hi,
What is the definitive site/format for uploading videos just for family and friends to view. (I.E send them an email with a link/password that says go here...)
Say 10 minutes max...but probably usually much less
I have VS10+...capable i think, of muliple formats...
Preferably free..but would consider a modest yearly fee...
Thanks in advance...

These are getting to be quite prevelant. One of the more popular sites is
You Tube. For more information on You Tube, video formats etc., you can read it HERE.
Another newer one is Google Video.
Then of course one that Intervideo * Ulead promotes is Drop Shots.
To give you a real good idea of just how many do a Google Search on the keywords "free video hosting".

No sorry I don't. Consider using a different file format, that would compress your files, yet still have good quality. I don't know what format you are using, but WMV, and DivX are good formats to use for streaming over the internet. I didn't mention DivX's website Divx.com. They have provisions for uploading DivX video, called Stage6. There are some pretty large videos uploaded there. If you download the DivX codec, then VS can encode to DivX.

I was going to suggest that, as I do have my own, however for board purposes use the freebies. I'm a little fearful of what the costs would be if suddenly 10,000 people were viewing 10 of my 200+ meg video filesnjdowding wrote:Another way to do this is to get your own site. Not free of course but then you can upload what you want as big as you want.

Nope..... My internet service provider only provides 30 MB of Space and is very quickly used up. They have another package that enables you to have 100MB of hard drive space for an extra ¢G4 (GBP) per month.njdowding wrote:Another way to do this is to get your own site. OK that's fine if you're using your website perhaps as a business tool to generate customers, but having to pay extra for the privilege of assisting others with tutorials, guides, sample videos - sorry but I have other things that need my hard earned cash like looking after my family.
Besides 100 MB would again be used up with one small video.
The only drawback I have found so far with the various free web space providers listed in the link I gave previously is the upload speed.
It can take what seems like a hour to upload a 500 MB video, going the other way though downloading only takes a few minutes or in the case of You Tube - your watching it almost instantaneous.

I think Nick is referring to the option to have a dedicated PC in your house to be a website server, in that case you can have website space as big as you want.sjj1805 wrote:Nope..... What you referred to is the option to buy a virtual server / web hosting package from the ISP, it's a little different and the CPU time / site bandwidth / site space are limited.
Some web hosting services will provide up to 10GB per month bandwidth and 5GB site space for $10 per month but will have limited CPU time. When your website runs over 25% or more CPU time, they will block your website until next month or you paid to unlock it.
