MF5-DVD Import sync issue

Post by progrocktv »

Here's a strange one. I'm capturing video using a Sony DVD recorder and recording onto a DVD+RW (I like how it handles better than capturing directly into the computer, even though it's an extra step) I'm converting TV episodes from SP VHS so I'm capturing the entire 2-hour tape to the hard drive in SP mode. I take the DVD+RW and import into MF5 as one mpg file. I take the imported file and set and in-point at the beginning of a 30 minute episode and an out-point at the end of the episode. I then re-import the mpg file from the capture folder and set the in and out for the second episode and so on. I add a menu for each episode (but not for each chapter) and burn the disc. Now the funny thing is it plays out fine on preview, however after I check the burned disc, the 4th episode on the disc is HORRIBLY out of sync (about 6 seconds), episodes 1-3 are perfectally fine. This doesn't happen on seperate files I import from several discs though (as if each episode ois on a seperate disc)

Any ideas?

As a temporary solution I can take the mpg file into Video Redo and export the last episode as a seperate file and bring that into MF5 which works fine but I'd rather eliminate this final step if possible.

It is quite common to have sync issues with low bitrate mpeg editing. That is a fact of life and not a shortcomming of DVD MF.

The only way to avoid this is your approach to capture. Maybe recording your tapes at the highes possible quality setting (a total waste of space considering the source is VHS) might, just might but worth a try, allieviate the problem. Other than that, capture to the PC in DV-AVI either via a suitable analog capture card or via the AV through function of a digital camcorder.

Yea I'll give it a shot. Thanks. Interesting thing is the audio isn't a drift issue (where it gets progressively worse as it plays out)but it's just out of sync to begin with and stays the same exact amount through the entire file.

I do have a soution with Video Redo though to fall back on, so all is not lost.

A dedicated mpeg editor like WOMBLE will also help according to some posts in the recent past. Because of these OOS issues I have abandoned capturing to mpeg and cannot offer experiences with Womble or Video Redo. All my footage is captured to DV-AVI and rendered to mpeg2 with MSP 8 or VS 10+. Only the final authoring to DVD is done in DVD MF 5+.
