Hi,
I've searched through the forums but not found an answer to my dilemma.
I've successfully created an avi file using widescreen footage and 4:3 footage together (using the overlay technique described in the tutorial posted on this forum).
I now have the following problems:
1) When I render, the only way to keep the 16:9 format, is to render using the same settings as the project. This causes my finished avi file to be 800Mb+ for a 4 min video. If I try to render for a smaller file size (eg DVD setting, or wmv for internet), it will only render in 4:3 and any titles inserted are moved into the black stripe above or below the video image.
I've tried changing all kinds of settings in the options dialog box, and most of the time the aspect ratio is greyed out, therefore not allowing me to change to 16:9.
I've also tried using Windows Media Encoder to convert to wmv, but I can't seem to reduce the file to a suitable size without it automatically converting to 4:3
Is there a way to render properly in 16:9 and control the quality (i.e. file size) at the same time?
Thanks
Richard.

Hi Richard
Create your own template using tools-Make Movie Manager
If you haven¡¦t used this tool before, Have a look at my guide below Make Movie Manager for a few tips.
Where are you in this world are you Pal or Ntsc
This is a sample for Pal that I would use in VS 8
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First ( check that you have selected the correct order)
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: 6000 kbps
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
Hope this helps

Thanks for that, that was just the ticket. I'd read something about the templates but obviously didn't understand it.
Just one other question, if anyone knows:
what's the best format to upload to youtube with. I've tried a large and a small mpg with differing bit rates and sizes, but when it's converted to flv on youtube, the quality is the same. Anyone know how to optimise quality? I don't think VS8 does mp4 which is what youtube suggests.
Thanks
Richard.

I've used the WMV 320x240 30fps template with great success.
