In the Editor you can open the Preferences dialog by File menu>Preferences or by Pressing F6 on your keyboard, then on the General tab you can set the location for a working folder for VS to use.

In the Burn module open the Preferences by clicking on the icon in the lower-left

The working folder setting is located on the first tab..

Both the 'Working Folder' and the 'Burn module' are pointing to the right locations.

The funny thing is, I can open VS and can not open to edit, Project.vsp. Nothing happens when I try to open the .vsp project. It doesn't even try to load the files comprising the project. The vsp file itself is in the right location and it has 1,168 KB. However, on the 'Share' menu, I only have three choices available, 1) Create Disc, 2) DV Recording 3) Share Video Online. When I click 'Create Disc', then I can preview the whole project in the Previewer on the 'Add Media' page and create another disc.

To me, this is saying that somehow I locked the project into the 'Create Disc' mode and VS won't let me open it in order to make corrections. Does that make sense?

No, because you can't "lock" a project. Sounds like your project somehow became corrupted. Unfortunately I don't think it can be recovered. That's why it's best to incrementally save your project as Project A, Project B, etc. Then, if something bad should happen, you can go back to a previous project version and don't have to rebuild the entire thing from scratch.

Just a thought - if you can see the project .vsp file - next thing I would try is to create a copy of it in Windows Explorer but give it a totally different name - say 'renamed.vsp' or something you will recognise later - then see if you can open the new one in VS.

But do I also understand from your questions that you went direct from the editing window into the 'Create Disc' window and burned a disc - it is usually recommended to create a video file first from your project - then when you open the Create Disc window delete the file automatically carried in and then load your newly created file - it is known amongst experienced users that going stright into the disc window and burning the video already there can give various problems - also that way your .vsp file is safely out of the way when you create a disc.

I tried a few ideas myself and then decided to use the backup copy that I hadn't backed up in quite a while.

This has certainly been a learning process and a good one at that, because I've decided to make some changes in order to fine tune the final copy.

Since I burned a CD of the completed Project, I monitor it on a laptop to be sure I'm using the right music for certain scenes, transitions, etc. Also, now I often 'Save' the Project in 'Project.vsp' and then I save a backup of the same Project under a totally different name.vsp.

Thanks Black Lab for also reminding me of a backup file. And especially thanks for letting me know that ...You can't 'lock' a project!

BrianCee. initially I tried to open a back-up file with a copy of the project including the same name, the only difference was 'Copy of Project.vsp' but it wouldn't open in VS. After reading your advise I went into Windows Explorer and renamed it with a totally different name, but it still will not open in VS.

I really appreciate your advice about first making a 'video file'. From now on that will be standard procedure before burning a CD.

Suggested work flow by SJJ1805 for Video Creation

Following recent discussions on the forum I have come to the conclusion that it would be more efficient for me to create my suggested work flow as a separate thread to those already in existence in an attempt to avoid confusion caused by the suggested methods made by other users.

The way that I view the entire process of getting from source to completion is to split the process up into 3 distinctive steps.

Step 1. Capture.
Step 2. Edit.
Step 3. Share.

Hi Steve,
I just wanted to say thank you for a good post. This has helped me immensely with the quality of DVD I can now produce. A simple answer, but it works very well.
