Alpha Channel ??

Post by cosmo777 »

Hello All,
How do you export/make movie with a ALPHA channel ?
Let me give you a simple example. I have, say, a red ball bouncing around on a black background. I want to take this file, into say, Adobe After Effects, and composite it over other scenery, so that you only see the red ball and not the black background all around it.

What file type ( Avi Mpeg Mov etc ) and what codec do I use ??

I am using Video Studio 9, 10, and Media Pro.

Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Hi

Try using Video Studio¡¦s¡XChrome Key
I don¡¦t use Media Pro but would assume it has the Chroma option.

Press F1 for help, search index for Chrome Key

I do not know, but it may depend on the properties of the video file as to whether you can use this option.

You do not give any information on your source video properties.

Avi and Mpeg files should be ok.

Give it a go, is the quickest option.

Hi Trevor,
Thanks for your help. Maybe I didn't explain my problem properly. I don't want to key out anything in Ulead - I want to save the file with an alpha channel, so I can take it to a specialist compositing program like Adobe After Effects, where all you have to do, is, place the file over any layer below it, and the black background " disappears " ( because it is alpha ),
which just leaves you with the red ball, or whatever you may have sitting on the background. That's the beauty of alpha channels-you don't have to key them out.
I have a suspicion that in Ulead you Can't save as an AVI, MPEG or Mov
WITH ALPHA CHANNEL. Maybe people in the Ulead community don't know what ALPHA channels are. And the reason I want to take the file to After Effects, is because of all the different compositing effects you can do, there. After all, Ulead is an NLE, whereas After Effects is a Compositor, right ?
But many thanks for trying, Trevor. I still need the answer, but I strongly suspect, it can't be done in Ulead.
Best regards from Cosmo

Hi

Now I understand, I have done this with still images.
But sorry, I have no experience in applying to a movie.

Afaik you cannot create these files using Video Studio.

I am sure you will receive further replies.

Good luck

Cosmo,

I done some looking and could not find any means for VS or MSP to render a 32-bit video file. The 32-bit file is the one needed for the Alpha channel. The closest codec I found that may have been able to do this is the Huffy codec. It has one configuration of RGBA, which is suppose to be Red Green Blue Alpha, however it still creates a 24 bit file, so the alpha channel is stripped away. However I don't and am not well versed in using this codec, so there still might be this possibility.

I've created these types of videos using Ulead's Cool 3D. Create an uncompressed .avi using Data type 32-Bit RGB :)

Cool 3D Information and Trial
