Manage Profile???
I was viewing the tutorials for VS8 and thumbing thru the help files when I came upon a dialog screen that highlights the various codecs installed. The title of the dialog box was "Manage Profile". I cannot find this anywhere in the program. Has anyone else seen this? Am I completely losing it?

If you go back a page from the picture of that dialogue box you will see that it can only be used when you import direct to Windows Media player format, to access it first select the 'Capture' Tab and switch to the capture screen. In the pane to the left of the preview screen in the box against 'Format' choose WMV (only) - now click on the 'Option' icon (small gear wheel) - choose "Video and Audio Capture Settings" - on the new dialogue box click on "Select" - in the next new dialogue box click on any profile and choose "Customise" -- -- 'Manage Profile' box opens.

I am not sure where 'Profile Manager' is, but you can find the listing of codecs available under 'Make Movie Manager' in 'Tools'. Click on one of the formats e.g. PAL DV, and then, on the box that comes up, click on the AVI (or extreme right) tab. There is a little window near the top which will probably say something like DV Encoder Type 1 or 2. But if you click on the drop arrow, all the various codecs appear.
I also get the same list in the Capture screen, when I click on the Options cog wheel icon. In the drop down list that appears, click on Video Compression, and the available codecs are listed.

In case anyone is interested, there are a couple of bugs in the handling of Windows Media Encoder profiles.
One which only affects UVS7 but not UVS8 has to do with VBR profiles. After you create or edit a VBR profile, it will not show up in the listbox of available profiles. Change it to CBR, and presto, it appears. Again, this works correctly under UVS8.
One problem that affects both versions is that profiles where the output size is set to "Same as source video" do not appear in the listbox. You will have to specifically set the output dimensions.
A finaly problem that affects both versions is that the profile name matching is flawed. Because of the problem of not being able to use the "Same as source video" output size, I copied the "Neptune Best Quality" profile and appended the configured output dimensions to the profile name, i.e. "Neptune Best Quality 640x480". I then selected "Neptune Best Quality 640x480" for the profile while rendering, yet the original ""Neptune Best Quality" profile was used. It appears that a partial match on the name is sufficient. Knowing about this might save you a couple of wasted hours, given how slow the WMV encoder is...
